a total of Rs 30 lakh (approx £28,000) was agreed

Indian police arrested a Canadian citizen of Punjabi origin, Jaspreet Kaur Dhesi, at Delhi airport, for using marriage as a pretext to dupe a man and his family out of the sum of Rs 11.70 lakh (approx £11,100).

Jaspreet was attempting to enter India coming from Canada when she was arrested because the police had issued a lookout circular (LOC) against her.

She was the key member of a gang that operated together to execute the cunning plan.

Other members of the gang Manpreet Kaur, Taranpreet Singh from Punjabi Bagh Jagraon, Karamjit Kaur from Chowkiman, and Jagmel Singh, also known as ‘Jagga’ from Dhudike were all part of the plot to deceive Gaurav Goyal and his family.

They promised the Goyal family that the marriage would lead to Gaurav joining Jaspreet in Canada for a new and prosperous life there.

The gang worked together to arrange Gaurav’s marriage with Jaspreet and subsequently, cheated the family out of the money.

According to the complaint filed by Gaurav’s father, Baldev Krishna Goyal, Manpreet Kaur the lead member of the gang, demanded an advance of Rs 1.50 lakh (approx £1400) for the marriage.

Then, a total of Rs 30 lakh (approx £28,000) was agreed upon for the marriage of his son. The money, they said, was to be used to help the couple ‘settle’ in Canada.

During the deception, Rs 2.50 lakh (approx £2300) was transferred on July 3, 2021, by Anita Goyal, Gaurav’s mother, who sent the money to Manpreet Kaur’s account.

However, the deceit continued when Manpreet Kaur asked for an additional Rs 5 lakh (approx £4700) from the family, which the family paid in desperation for the marriage to take place.

However, despite repeated requests during the process, Manpreet refused to disclose the address of Jaspreet Kaur Dhesi in Punjab or her residential address in Canada

In the end, neither did Manpreet fulfil her promise of sending Gaurav to Canada nor returning the money, ultimately swindling all the money from the family.

Following an investigation by the DSP of Jagraon Police, a case was registered against Manpreet Kaur, Jaspreet Kaur Dhesi, Taranpreet Singh, Karamjit Kaur, and Jagmel Singh.

When Jaspreet attempted to return to Punjab, the Delhi airport authorities promptly informed the police.

Acting on the information, a police team led by Sub Inspector Rajdhim swiftly arrested her at Delhi airport, preventing her from evading the law.

Following their arrest, Manpreet Kaur, Taranpreet Singh, Karamjit Kaur, and Jagmel Singh were all granted bail by the High Court in connection with the case.

The case highlights the importance of caution and verification when dealing with financial transactions and prospective marriages, especially involving international marital partners.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working diligently to ensure that all the accused face appropriate legal consequences for their fraudulent actions.
