Bollywood Actor turned Educator awarded Prestigious UK Honour

Swaroop Sampat Rawal has been honoured with a prestigious Fellowship from the University of Worcester, marking a major milestone in her remarkable journey from Bollywood star to globally respected educator.

The celebrated actress and former Miss India said the recognition made her reflect on her growth from a hesitant student to a confident academic who found her purpose in the UK.

Her Fellowship highlights her evolving legacy as an influential figure in education and social change across India and beyond.

The University described her achievements as inspiring, particularly as her work continues to impact children worldwide.

The honour further cements her long-standing connection with the institution.

Swaroop rose to fame in the sitcom Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi before winning the title of Femina Miss India Universe 1979 and representing India at the Miss Universe 1979 pageant, which led to a career in entertainment that later evolved into a passion for teaching.

She also appeared in the Kamal Haasan-Reena Roy starrer Karishma.

Her interest in education led her to pursue a PhD in Education at the University of Worcester, where she earned her degree in 2006.

Her doctoral work explored how drama-based learning could help develop life skills among children with learning disabilities.

The research shaped her teaching philosophy and has since influenced classrooms across India.

Reflecting on the Fellowship, Swaroop said the recognition felt overwhelming and deeply personal.

She said it made her think of her younger self, who often felt unsure as a student before discovering her strengths at Worcester.

She described the University as the place where her confidence flourished and her academic path became clear.

She added that being welcomed into the College of Fellows felt truly special.

The Fellowship arrives as she also receives the Education World Educational Researcher TREE Award for 2025 to 2026, which celebrates impactful educators.

Swaroop has remained closely connected to the University of Worcester since completing her PhD.

She continues to visit the campus whenever she is in the UK, maintaining strong ties with the academic community that shaped her career.

In 2018, she was honoured with an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of her contributions to education and social development.

She said her time at Worcester changed her life and expanded her imagination in unexpected ways.

She added that the University unlocked her creativity and shaped her into a confident academic whose work continues to influence global education.

Swaroop is married to actor and former politician Paresh Rawal and continues to champion inclusive and creative learning methods.

Her Fellowship marks yet another chapter in her mission to transform education and inspire future generations.
