“Pushkar has many good memories for me."
The much-loved restaurant Pushkar will close after 17 years, but bosses have hinted at an exciting new chapter ahead.
Pushkar, based on Birmingham’s Broad Street, announced on May 21 that it would soon “close its doors” after “17 years of memories”.
The announcement sparked concern among loyal customers, though a follow-up message suggested the closure may be temporary.
The restaurant was opened in 2009 by Rai Singh, who grew up in Handsworth and spent three years in Punjab before launching his first hospitality venture.
Despite having no prior experience in the industry, Rai’s debut proved a major success.
Pushkar earned a string of prestigious awards over the years.
These included Best Indian Restaurant in 2015 and 2018, Best of Birmingham in 2019, and Best in Birmingham at the 2024 and 2025 Nation’s Curry Awards.
It was also named Best Midlands Asian Restaurant at the 2022 Asian Restaurant Awards and Best Indian Restaurant in the West Midlands at the 2021 British Curry Awards.
Known for its innovative approach to Indian cuisine, Pushkar offered diners the choice of à la carte or one of four banquet menus starting at £29 per person.
It pushed the boundaries of conventional cooking, offering a culinary journey that is both captivating and extraordinary.
But the restaurant’s appeal extended beyond food.
Its stylish white and gold interior helped create a glamorous atmosphere, while a well-regarded cocktail bar made Pushkar a favourite late-night hangout for many.
Following the initial announcement, one worried fan commented: “Don’t tell me you’re closing?? This cannot be true.”
Another said: “Nooo!” while a third added: “Pushkar has many good memories for me. Hope you’re not closing.”
Two days later, the restaurant offered reassurance.
It posted:
“Now, we close our doors – but not for long. Something remarkable is on its way. Stay with us.”
After it was announced that there would be a new venture, fans were excited to see what was next.
One commented: “Can’t wait to see what’s next for you and us.”
The Pushkar team promoted its final Massi’s Yard party, which took place on May 31.
It encouraged regulars to attend, saying: “An afternoon of music, memories and magic as we close the doors on a legendary chapter. Let’s make it unforgettable.”
