Alia Bhatt starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, releases on July 30, 2021.
The poster and teaser officially released on Bhansali’s 58th birthday, February 24, 2021, revealing the all-new bold avatar of Alia as the Queen of Kathiawadi.
Inspired by the chapter ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ from Hussain Zaidi’s book, the film revolves around a young girl who embraces the challenges thrown at her and swings them in her favour.
Alia looks ravishing in a crisp, white Sari with a big, round, red tikka on her forehead.
The teaser takes us to Kamathipura, a town where a girl named Gangu is about to turn her destiny. She is bold and embraces the circumstances that lead her to become the Queen.
With the empowering role and impactful delivery of dialogue, Alia manages to impress the audiences from the beginning of the short teaser.
In their tweet, Bhansali Productions claimed:

Alia posted both the poster and the teaser on her Instagram followed by a birthday wish for the director in the caption:

The teaser received immense love and excitement on Twitter from the film fraternity.
Priyanka Chopra tweeted: “Alia!!!! I’m so proud of you my friend for stepping into complexity fearlessly.

Karan Johar expressed his excitement, saying:

Alongside Alia as the main lead, Ajay Devgn has a guest appearance in the movie.
Emraan Hashmi and Huma Qureshi also have impactful roles.
The shooting for the film began in late 2019. It was expected to release in September 2020, but the shooting came to a halt when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world.
After the completion, the film also faced a lawsuit by Gangubai Kathiawadi’s adopted son where he claimed that they were presenting a false image of his mother.
He believed the portrayal of his mom as a mafia queen with links to the underworld was giving a negative image of who she really was.
The court, however, decided in favour of Bhansali and his team.
It is now finally set to release in July and is expected to be one of the major Bollywood releases of 2021.
