"I had quit films. In my heart, I had left films."
Aamir Khan explained that he has been in a contemplative mood for a few years.
The actor said that like everybody else, he has lost a lot during the Covid-19 pandemic, but he has also gained a lot.
In 2021, he separated from his wife Kiran Rao.
He admitted that he felt so bad about not being there for his family for many years, he decided to quit the film industry to make up for lost time.
Aamir said: “No I quit. Nobody knows this.
“I’m saying for the first time, you will be shocked. I had informed my family that I won’t be doing any films from now onwards.
“Neither I’ll act nor I will produce any films. I don’t want to do all this.
“I just want to spend my time with you all. Kiran and her parents, Reena and her parents, my children, my family are there. I felt that. I understand it was a response in anger.
“My family was shocked as I was conveying it to them in such an intense way. Nobody argued with me.
“Then I thought I should tell people that I won’t be acting in films now.
“Then I said if I tell people they will say, ‘This is his marketing scheme as his film Laal Singh Chaddha is about to release, he is announcing his retirement’.
“One day, my children told me that you are an extreme person, don’t do this.
“It will be better if you find a balance in life. I had quit films. In my heart, I had left films.
“My children and Kiran explained to me I am doing the wrong thing.”
Aamir added: “I feel like I’d spent my life chasing my dreams and trying to fulfil them.
“But during this journey, I didn’t pay attention to my loved ones. My parents, my siblings, my children, my first wife Reena, my second wife Kiran, their parents.
“Perhaps I couldn’t devote enough time to them. My daughter is now 23. I am sure she must have missed my presence in her life when she was younger.
“She will have had her own anxieties, fears, dreams and hopes.
“I wasn’t there for her, I know this now.
“I didn’t know her dreams and fears and hopes, but I knew the fears and dreams and hopes of my directors.”
Aamir went on to speak about his relationship with ex-wives Kiran Rao and Reena Dutta.
He said that he grew up with Reena and that they would still be friends even if they never married.
Speaking about Kiran, Aamir Khan admitted that people might find it odd to see them continuing to socialise in public, but he stated that they remain on good terms.
“We would like to respect the institution of marriage, and not be in a marriage and not respect the boundaries of what people consider are the boundaries of a marriage.”
Providing further details about the arrangement he has with Kiran, Aamir said that she lives on the floor above his.
Because they live so close to each other, their son Azad does not experience any drastic change in his life.
However, they have explained what marriage and divorce involves.
On the professional front, Aamir Khan admitted that he is still unsure about how his film Laal Singh Chaddha has turned out.
“One day, I’ll feel like we made a good film, and the next day, I’ll feel like we dropped the ball. So, it’s that stage of excitement, where you’re still trying to get it right.
Laal Singh Chaddha has been delayed several times but is now expected to release on August 11, 2022.
