    Whether rain or sun, or especially a cold frosty night, hot chocolate is the one drink that is guaranteed to keep you warm and sweet.

    From orange and mint, to a spicy brew that packs some heat, the various combinations of hot chocolate with added extras is pretty endless.

    Gingerbread Hot Chocolate

    For a sweet and spicy addition to traditional cocoa, try hot chocolate with homemade gingerbread syrup!


    • 450ml milk
    • 3 tbsp gingerbread syrup
    • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 4 tsp sugar

    For gingerbread syrup:

    • 225ml water
    • 170g brown sugar
    • 1 tsp cinnamon
    • 1 tsp ground ginger
    • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
    • 1/2 tsp ground cloves


    1. To make the gingerbread syrup, mix water, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves into a saucepan.
    2. Heat to a light boil and then let it simmer for 15 minutes to thicken to a syrup like consistency.
    3. Next, warm milk over a low heat in a separate saucepan and add sugar, cocoa powder and syrup.
    4. Pour into a mug and serve!

    Salted Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate

    Peanut butter lovers can truly indulge in this delectable treat with an added salty crunch.


    • 56g sugar
    • 32g cocoa
    • 56ml water
    • 675 ml milk
    • 2-4 tbsp creamy peanut butter
    • 85g dark or bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
    • Pinch of sea salt


    1. Mix sugar and cocoa together in a saucepan and add water until a smooth consistency.
    2. Whisk in milk on medium flame until the mixture begins to steam.
    3. Add peanut butter and chopped chocolate and blend using an electric whisk.
    4. Serve in a mug and top with crushed sea salt.

    Peppermint White Hot Chocolate

    For mint chocolate fans, this is a must try recipe, that will make your cocoa refreshingly delicious.


    • 900ml milk
    • 227g white chocolate, chopped into small pieces
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1/2 tsp peppermint extract


    1. In a saucepan mix milk and chopped white chocolate together until melted.
    2. Remove from the heat and stir in vanilla and peppermint extract.
    3. Pour into mug and top with whipped cream and crushed peppermints.

    Cardamom Hot Chocolate

    Cinnamon and cardamom are a perfect spiced addition to hot chocolate and will even satisfy the Desi in you.


    • 450ml milk
    • 28g dark or bittersweet chocolate
    • 1 cinnamon stick, crushed
    • 4 cardamom pods, crushed
    • 3 tbsp sugar


    1. In a saucepan whisk all the ingredients together on a low heat until the chocolate has fully melted.
    2. When it starts to simmer remove from heat and strain into mugs.

    Spicy Hot Chocolate

    For a spicier kick, opt for red chillies in your hot chocolate.

    Also know as the Aztec or Mexican hot chocolate, this hot drink also uses a hint of cinnamon.


    • 225ml of milk
    • 115g dark chocolate pieces
    • 1-2 tbsp sugar
    • 1 chili pepper, split in half and seeds removed
    • ½ tsp cinnamon
    • ½ tsp vanilla
    • Pinch of salt


    1. Melt chocolate into a saucepan with a splash of milk.
    2. Whisk in all the other ingredients until it starts to boil.
    3. Turn off the heat and let the cocoa sit for a few minutes before straining into mugs.

    Red Velvet Hot Chocolate

    • 900ml whole milk
    • 112g granulated sugar
    • 280g plain or semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
    • 2 tsp red food colour
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract


    1. Mix together milk and sugar into a saucepan on a medium flame.
    2. Stir in chocolate until melted.
    3. Add food colouring and vanilla extract.
    4. Pour into mugs and top with oozes of whipped cream.

    Orange Hot Chocolate

    Another crowd pleaser, orange hot chocolate has an unbeatable taste, and will have you and your guests yearning for seconds.


    • 75ml chilled whipping cream
    • 1 tsp dark brown sugar
    • 1 litre milk
    • 4 large oranges
    • 255g good-quality milk chocolate, chopped
    • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder


    1. In a bowl, whisk cream and brown sugar together until it forms stiff peaks. Refrigerate for later.
    2. Take rinds/peel of four oranges.
    3. Add to milk in a saucepan and heat over a medium flame.
    4. Once it starts to simmer, remove from heat and let it sit covered for 30 minutes.
    5. Strain the mixture and return milk to the saucepan.
    6. Add chocolate and cocoa powder and whisk on medium heat until melted.
    7. Let it simmer for a few minutes before pouring into mugs.
    8. Garnish with orange peel twists and serve!
