"I took my stardom for granted."
Zayed Khan, once a very popular actor, has not had a smooth sailing at the box office.
The star achieved fame with Farah Khan’s Main Hoon Naa (2004).
Although Zayed gained recognition for his role, he was seen as the second fiddle to Shah Rukh Khan in the film.
Zayed Khan opened up about the downfall of his career, blaming part of it on similar multi-starrer films.
He said: “I took my stardom for granted and didn’t listen to a lot of people who advised me to do single-hero films.
“Once you are absorbed by a market, you have to show them that you are able to hold a film on your shoulders.
“It’s a big responsibility. I wanted to work in big films. I wasn’t bred to do artistic films.
“I was so much into the action genre that big-ticket action films always got the better of me.
“When many actors come together, budgets are justified to make them. Probably I went into that too soon.
“I should have built my brand before going for big-ticket films. I guess I regret that.
“Some of them didn’t just hit the golden goose. I mean, who won’t sign a film like Blue?”
Zayed Khan is the son of the veteran actor Sanjay Khan. He also shared his father’s reaction to his film choices.
Zayed continued: “He was very miffed with me. We used to have a lot of arguments about that. He had his reservations.
“Offers still haven’t dried up. You have to pick and choose the right thing.
“Sometimes, when you are at the ebb of your career, that doesn’t mean you take up BS.
“Offers started coming in where they wanted to make me a second fiddle or a supervillain, and I wasn’t ready to do those kinds of roles.”
In the 1970s, Sanjay Khan had a scandalous relationship with the veteran star Zeenat Aman.
They married in 1978 but the relationship was annulled the following year.
Zayed also delved into this controversy, stating: “It wasn’t just at my dad’s house but was happening in every actor’s house.
“Every person was highly eccentric except one or two oddballs who were really sincere and grounded.”
“The rest of them… phew! When I was young, I used to see these guys partying and dressing up in those jazzy Versace shirts and their things.
“It was a whole different era back then. They were real personalities.”
It was alleged that Sanjay physically attacked Zeenat during an argument, which led the actress to have a weakened eye.
Meanwhile, Zayed Khan was last seen in Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene (2015).
