"It is absolutely imperative for me to take a stand."

In August 2024, the rape and murder of an Indian medic shook millions, including Shreya Ghoshal.

The incident took place in Kolkata where 31-year-old Moumita Debnath was found with multiple injuries and signs of sexual assault.

Shreya Ghoshal has subsequently decided to postpone her concert in the city. The show is part of her All Hearts Tour.

In a statement on X, the singer wrote: “I am deeply affected by the gruesome and heinous incident that recently took place in Kolkata.

“Being a woman myself, the very thought of the sheer brutality that she must have gone through is unthinkable and sends shivers down my spine.

“With an aching heart and with deep sorrow, my promoters (Ishq FM) and I wish to reschedule our concert, ‘Shreya Ghoshal Live, All Hearts Tour Ishq FM Grand Concert’ which was originally scheduled for September 14, 2024, to a new date in October 2024.

“This concert was highly anticipated by all of us but it is absolutely imperative for me to take a stand and join you all in solidarity.

“I sincerely pray for the respect and safety of the women in this world, not just our country.

“I am hopeful my friends and fans will accept and understand our decision to push this concert.

“Please stay together with my band and myself as we stand united against the demons of humankind.

“I request you to bear with us while we announce a new date. Your current tickets will remain valid for the new date.

“Looking forward to seeing you all. Love, prayers, and hope.”

The statement elicited messages of support for Shreya on social media.

One fan wrote: “Thank you, ma’am. Any sane person will stand in solidarity with your decision.

“I know it is our basic duty to fight for a society equally safe for all but it is so rare.

“As a fellow Bengali and a doctor, I thank you from the core of my heart for taking a stand so firmly. A proud fan always.”

Another fan said: “As far as I know, this is one of the few times you have decided to reschedule a concert.

“Knowing the reason behind it makes me feel incredibly proud.”

“I completely support your decision and hope everyone else will understand and do the same. Thank you for taking this step.”

In February 2024, Shreya Ghoshal performed a show for her All Hearts Tour at London’s OVO Wembley Arena.

During the performance, she was gifted with an award by the organisers. This recognised that she had sold out the arena.

Shreya Ghoshal is known for chartbusters including ‘Chikni Chameli‘, ‘Jab Saiyaan’, and ‘Dola Re Dola’.
