"amita & inej both deserve better"
Netflix’s Shadow and Bone is facing criticism after making the decision to give Amita Suman’s character Inej a white stunt double.
Leigh Bardugo, author of Shadow and Bone, made having a diverse cast a priority when her book series was adapted into a major television show.
Critics and fans have praised the show for its diversity since its release.
However, Nepal-born British actress Amita Suman appears to have been given a white stunt double.
The show has also painted her face brown, as well as putting her in a brown bodysuit, to film her stunt scenes.
As a result, Shadow and Bone is receiving major backlash for this controversial move.
Angry Twitter users have taken to the platform to express their disgust at the surprising, and offensive, casting choice.
One user posted two photos of Amita Suman and her Hungarian stunt double, Vellai Krisztina.
The second picture, taken on set, shows Krisztina wearing an obvious tanned bodysuit.
Her white neck is also in stark contrast to her much darker face.

Other users slammed Netflix and Shadow and Bone for not seeing the issue with hiring a white stunt double for a brown actress.
“hey @netflix @HIGHzurrer whats this about you hiring a white stunt double for amita, a BROWN woman??
“& not a single person working on the show thought that was weird or f****d up??
“shame on u, amita & inej both deserve better & I feel so sad for amita that she had to see that”
A second said:
“just seeing the piece of paper with “inej stunt” right next to a white woman is all kinds of messed up”
Shadow and Bone has also received criticism for its hypocrisy in highlighting its diversity and hiring a white stunt double.
the fact that the shadow and bone show used diversity as their whole marketing campaign while knowing they put a white woman in brown face to be a south asain characters stunt double INSTEAD of just hiring actual poc ?? ??

However, despite Twitter’s outrage at Shadow and Bone’s casting choice, Vellai Krisztina seems to have no problem with playing a brown actress.
The stunt double posted some images of her, while in brownface, to her public Instagram before it went private on Thursday, May 6, 2021.
Krisztina captioned the post with multiple hashtags, including ‘#blackqueen’ and ‘#blackhair’.
However, despite the backlash, Amita Suman has praised Krisztina for her performance in Shadow and Bone.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, Suman described Krisztina as an “incredible stunt double”. She also said that she helped bring the character of Inej to life.
