"That’s the first time I met her. It seems a little weird now to say."
Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are among Bollywood’s beloved couples, but recently, they have been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Ranbir recently appeared on a podcast with Nikhil Kamath where he recalled meeting Alia for the first time on a film set.
However, the nostalgic anecdote caused controversy because the film was about child marriage.
Ranbir was 20 at the time while Alia was just nine-years-old.
Speaking about being married to Alia, Ranbir said:
“I’m so lucky I married somebody I’m so close to as a friend where we can really chat, laugh, b***h. She’s my best friend, and I got really lucky with that.”
Recalling their first meeting, he revealed:
“Alia is a wonderful person. She’s very colourful.
“She’s 11 years younger than me and it’s very funny, the first time I met Alia was when she was 9 years old and I was 20 years old and we did a photoshoot together because Sanjay Leela Bhansali wanted to make a film called Balika Vadhu about child marriage.
“That’s the first time I met her. It seems a little weird now to say.”
Later in the interview, Ranbir also said:
“I have immense respect for her as an actor, an artist, a person, a daughter, and a sister.”
His comments went viral and many were baffled, with one commenting:
“Did he really just say he has respect towards her like a daughter and sister after saying they met when she was 9 and he was 20… It sounded soooo wrong.”
Another wrote:
“Every time someone asks Ranbir about Alia, it turns into a nightmare headline.”
Ranbir also said of Alia: “She changed for me more than I changed for her.
“She used to speak in a very loud tone, and I think because of my father’s tone growing up, it always kind of rattled me.”
On Ranbir’s additional comments, a netizen said:
“This is not something we should romanticise.”
Another wrote: “No matter how many times people sell the idea of Ranbir being a good person, I will never believe it.”
Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt began dating during the pre-production of Brahamastra: Part One – Shiva in 2018 and tied the knot in a small ceremony at their Mumbai home in April 2022.
The two welcomed their first child, Raha, in November that year.
The couple is set to reunite on-screen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming film Love and War alongside Vicky Kaushal.
