"He was very remorseful in court."

A Punjabi man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his wife in British Columbia, Canada.

The man is named Navinder Gill. He stabbed his wife, Harpreet Kaur Gill to death on December 7, 2022.

The couple had three children together – all of whom were under 10 years of age at the time of the murder.

After the attack, Harpreet Gill, aged 40, was rushed to hospital but died of her injuries.

Gill was subsequently arrested on December 15, 2022. The next day, he was charged with second-degree murder.

On June 22, 2023, he pleaded guilty to killing his wife.

Navinder Gill’s sentencing took place on February 21, 2024.

Sergeant Timothy Pierott, a spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said:

“Incidents of intimate partner violence have a profound effect on families and communities.

“We’re thankful for the great work being done by Surrey RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) Victim Services and the Ministry of Children and Family Development who continue to support the family and the community.”

Gagan Nahal, a lawyer for Navinder Gill, expressed his client’s remorse about the incident.

He stated: “He was very remorseful in court today. It’s a very tragic incident, that’s all I can say.”

Harpreet Gill worked as a teacher.

When the Punjabi man pleaded guilty in 2023, Nahal had commented:

“The victim here Ms. Harpreet Kaur Gill. She was a mother.

“She was a wife, she was a daughter, she was a sister of someone, and our condolences go out to the entire family.

“Regardless of whatever happens in court in the future, it won’t be enough to bring justice to the family, because we won’t be able to bring back a lost one here.”

When asked if a guilty plea was possible from Gill, Nahal responded:

“We have not received full disclosure at this point in time, and when we do receive full disclosure and review it, we will be in a better position to comment on that.

“Right now, it’s way too early to be giving any indication of whether he will be pleading guilty or not guilty.”

“From what I have heard, this case is still under investigation and I cannot say whether more people will be charged or not.

“Is it possible? Yes, but at this point only one person has been charged, and that’s Navinder Singh Gill.

Harpreet Gill’s parents and brother live in India and are reportedly concerned about the future of her children.

A GoFundMe page allegedly raised over $18,000 (£15,366) to support them.

Meanwhile, Gill must serve a minimum of 10 years before becoming eligible for parole.
