Priyanka Chopra reveals Negativity from South Asians

In an interview, Priyanka Chopra opened up on receiving a lot of negativity from her “own community”, meaning fellow South Asians.

Priyanka Chopra explained that she receives a lot of negativity from the South Asian community.

The actress, who has been focusing largely on international projects in the last few years, revealed the not-so-welcome response.

She stated that while a lot of people are protective of her, she also gets a “sense of negativity” from many.

In an interview, Priyanka said that she and “very few” other brown people in the entertainment industry who are trying to push for inclusivity in Hollywood.

However, they receive a lot of negativity from members of their own community.

Priyanka explained: “I do notice a sense of protectiveness from a lot of people but also a sense of cynicism from a lot of people and a sense of negativity from a lot of people that have known me for a really long time.

“Picking on me for no reason…”

“I was talking about this to Mindy (Kaling) a couple of months ago and we were talking about why is it that you get so much negativity from your own community.

“Very few brown people are in the entertainment business in Hollywood, right?

“You can count us on your fingers.

“What our attempt is… We are literally, with our own two hands, trying to create more opportunity for people like us.

“So, why is there so much negativity for us?”

Priyanka Chopra said that when she began starring in Quantico in 2015, she discovered that it is “not normal to people’s consciousness that a leading man or woman can be Indian in a mainstream Hollywood show”.

At that point, she saw the difference in perception towards her.

She added that while she is grateful for the love and support of her fans, she feels “disheartened and discouraged by the other side”.

On the work front, Priyanka Chopra is coming off the release of her memoir.

Titled Unfinished, the actress opened up on her experiences within the film industry as well as her life growing up.

She revealed that as a student in the United States, she was racially abused by fellow students.

Priyanka also revealed that during her early career in Bollywood, a director suggested that she needed cosmetic surgery.

She said: “He stared at me long and hard, assessing me, and then suggested that I get a boob job, fix my jaw, and add a little more cushioning to my butt.”

On the film front, Priyanka has various international projects such as Text For You and The Matrix 4.

She also has the Amazon thriller series Citadel.
