Prime Minister Imran Khan gave an international address, however, his choice of clothing ended up getting more attention.

On April 12, 2020, the PM urged the international community to help developing countries fight the Coronavirus pandemic.

In the video message, PM Khan was seen wearing a dark green tracksuit top.

This sent social media users into a frenzy.

While some people praised him for his “simplicity”, others criticised him for dressing casually during an important appearance.

Journalist Cyril Almeida posted: “Appealing to the developed world in his… PJs?”

Another user agreed: “Wearing a tracksuit and addressing the World! How you have diminished our good country.”

One person was not happy with the PM’s choice of clothing, writing:

“Did Imran Khan just address the nation and UN in a tracksuit? Seriously?”

Other netizens requested people to focus on the message rather than Imran Khan’s tracksuit.

One person commented: “I am OK with Imran Khan turning up to address the international leaders and community in his PJs/tracksuit top.

“What I’m NOT okay with is disproportionate military spending and shamelessly asking the rest of the world to subsidise #Pakistani healthcare. Fix your own house first.”

Some social media users supported Khan’s decision to wear a tracksuit.

One person wrote: “Imran Khan addressing international institutions in a tracksuit is the best thing on the internet today. My PM loves breaking stereotypes.”

Another person stated that people should not engage in “petty decisions”, saying:

“There are lots of things to be critical about Imran Khan for wearing a tracksuit during a lockdown isn’t one of them.”

“Just makes people seem petty and blinded by partisanship.”

Khan’s former wife Reham Khan also joined in the trolling. Not only did she criticise his choice of clothing but she also said that his tracksuit option was a “dreadful one”.

Reham went on to slam her ex-husband, telling her followers to donate money to him so that he could buy more clothes.

In the message, PM Khan had urged the international community to respond to the dilemma faced by developing countries during the ongoing Coronavirus crisis.

Pointing out that the pandemic posed unprecedented health and economic challenges, Khan said that a global recession was certain to happen, which could be worse than the “Great Depression”.

He added that “a global pandemic cannot be contained without strong, coordinated and well-crafted global response”.
