Police have arrested a Pakistani man for abducting and murdering his ex-wife.

Wajiha Swati, a US Pakistani woman, was abducted and murdered sometime in October 2021.

Two months after the case came to light, police arrested Rizwan Habib, who eventually confessed to killing his former wife.

Police recovered her body from a house in Lakki Marwat.

Rizwan, his father and a domestic worker were arrested in Rawalpindi.

Wajiha had been married, however, her husband passed away in 2014. In 2016, she tied the knot with Rizwan.

Wajiha had arrived in Rawalpindi from the United States in mid-2021 and stayed with Rizwan.

However, after she arrived, differences between the couple began to develop.

On October 16, the woman disappeared from her home.

In a statement, police said: “Wajiha Swati went missing on October 16, 2021, from her home in mysterious circumstances and remained unnoticed for two weeks.”

Abdullah Mehdi Ali, Wajiha’s eldest son from her first marriage and based in the US, became concerned when he unsuccessfully tried to contact his mother.

Subsequently, he decided to email a complaint, submitting an application for the registration of an FIR against Rizwan.

According to the complaint, Abdullah claimed that Rizwan abducted his mother and “exposed her to mental, physical and sexual abuse”.

He believed this was the case as Rizwan had previously threatened him and his auntie. Rizwan also allegedly threatened to kill Wajiha if the matter was reported to the police.

An FIR was registered on November 2, 2021.

But despite the case and the fact that Rizwan was named in the FIR, he was not arrested at the time.

In December 2021, the Pakistani man was arrested.

Police said the delay was because they needed sufficient evidence of Rizwan’s involvement in the case.

During questioning, he admitted to killing Wajiha.

Rizwan explained that he kidnapped Wajiha and killed her later that day.

Under the advice of his domestic worker, he moved her body from Rawalpindi to Lakki Marwat, Khyber Pakhtunkhawa.

He then dumped the victim’s body in a room at the domestic worker’s house.

Police arrested Rizwan as well as his father and domestic worker for their involvement.

Officers have said it is too early to determine whether the victim had been drugged before being murdered. This will be determined following a post-mortem.

SSP Syed Ghazanfar stated that the case is being heard at Lahore High Court while the US Embassy in Pakistan also exchanged information on the case.
