It is reported that Mahira Khan will star in the remake of 1972’s Pakeezah.

In the original, Meena Kumari played the dual roles of Nargis and Sahibjaan. According to reports, Mahira will take on these roles.

A source said: “Mahira is onboard, but she is one of many stars we are aiming for in the remake of this epic.

“More well-known musicians are in discussions to appear in the movie.”

In addition to the Raees star, many prominent names are in consideration for the upcoming project.

Mahira Khan seemingly spoke about her interest in the role following her introduction to the Bollywood scene with Raees, opposite Shah Rukh Khan.

During an interview, Mahira said she was interested in playing the role should a remake happen.

According to reports, the actress said that she is a big fan of Meena Kumari, Rekha and Madhubala and has a “buddhi rooh” inside her.

“I am a big, big fan of Guru Dutt and Pyasa, so I would have loved to do that.”

Pakeezah is one of the most popular projects under Meena Kumari’s belt.

It is believed that Pakeezah took 14 years to curate and develop.

A crew member shared that for the director, Kamal Amrohi, a day would be considered productive even if a single shot was completed.

Pakeezah was considered one of the most expensive films to have been made in the 1970s.

The project was made on a budget of between Rs. 12.5 million (£123,000) and Rs. 15 million (£148,000) and was released on February 4, 1972.

Pakeezah opened to mixed responses from critics.

The hit film was criticised for its extravagance and plot.

Nevertheless, it was the highest-grossing Indian film of the year, collecting Rs. 60 million (£594,000) after a theatrical run of over 50 weeks.

Trade analysts said its popularity might have been caused by Meena Kumari’s death a month after its release.

Meena Kumari was nominated for the Filmfare Award for ‘Best Actress’ and won a special award at the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards.

Pakeezah also received nominations for ‘Best Film’ and ‘Best Director’. The film also won NB Kulkarni an award for ‘Best Art Direction’ at the Filmfare Awards.

As for Mahira Khan, the actress is still enjoying the success of The Legend of Maula Jatt.

On the work front, she will be seen with Fawad Khan in Neelofar. According to reports, Mahira said that Neelofar was then the most challenging role she decided to take on.
