“We didn’t realise hooliganism and violence is happening there too."
The family of Kirandeep Kaur, who was allegedly murdered in her West London home, have called for justice and appealed for help to return her body to India.
Kirandeep was allegedly attacked while sleeping beside her husband and three-month-old baby at their home in Hayes on the morning of July 12.
The 24-year-old, who had been living in the UK since 2024 on a student visa, suffered a stab wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at 8:26 am.
Speaking to ITV News, her mother, Baljeet, said:
“We send them somewhere safe to study, then this happens.
“We didn’t realise hooliganism and violence is happening there too.
“We want justice, we want our daughter’s body returned from Hayes.”
Her brother, Gurvinder Singh, said the family only learned of her death on Friday.
He said: “We were shocked, we don’t understand what we can do.”
He added that the family has no one who can bring Kirandeep’s body back to their village in Punjab.
A GoFundMe page organised by the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall Gurdwara has been launched to help cover funeral costs, repatriate Ms Kaur’s body to India and support her family.
As of July 21, the fundraiser has raised more than £58,000.
According to evidence heard at the Old Bailey, the attack followed an alleged series of random incidents involving Daniel Sean James.
Prosecutor Charlene Sumnall told the court that James, dressed in black and carrying a large knife, was captured on CCTV and doorbell cameras walking through a playing field in Hayes before approaching three different addresses.
He is then alleged to have stabbed a man in his 20s in the back.
Minutes later, at around 7:51 am, James allegedly kicked at the door of Kirandeep’s home on Uxbridge Road before forcing his way inside while the family slept.
The court heard that Kirandeep’s husband woke to the sound of her scream and saw a figure leaving the bedroom.
James allegedly left the property around two minutes later by jumping from a kitchen-living room window.
After breaking both ankles in the fall, he is said to have attempted to flee before collapsing around 10 metres away.
The Old Bailey heard that both alleged victims were complete strangers to the defendant.
James, of Mercer Place in Pinner, West London, was treated in hospital before being taken into custody.
He has been charged with the murder of Kirandeep Kaur, attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.
Judge Nigel Lickley KC scheduled a plea hearing for October 1 and provisionally listed a three-week trial to begin on April 5, 2027. James was remanded into custody.
