"I am angry with him but my love is greater. Yet if it happens again, I am done."

After the expose of Asian Labour MP Keith Vaz for taking drugs and having sex with male prostitutes, his wife, Maria Fernandes, has finally spoken about it in an interview with The Mail on Sunday.

Vaz has been in the spotlight ever since the scandal was released in the media and the stressful impact on his family was going to be inevitable.

After stating her husband had done a terrible thing, Maria insisted he still ‘is a good person’.

Lawyer and mother, Maria Fernandes said she had decided to give her husband a second chance, but warned him that he needs to change or she’ll “sling him out”.

She has moved back into their marital bed, after spending time in a spare room, out of fear that her husband could be suicidal.

“He wanted to kill himself twice – once as Europe minister (when he was caught up in a scandal over passports) – and again now. He just wanted to die.”

“We have to look after our own. I am angry with him but my love is greater. Yet if it happens again, I am done,” she says.

After the betrayal sunk in, Ms. Fernandes said: “I would have liked to have taken all my crockery and broken it on his head.”

“My immediate thought was to tell him to leave then have space to discuss things.”

Vaz, who could undergo criminal investigation, will go through a course of tests for sexually transmitted diseases, after admitting having unprotected sex with the gay escorts.

His actions also heavily affected his two children. Their 19-year-old daughter angrily confronted her father when he told them the news.

Hs wife expands: “My daughter was devastated by it all. I had to make sure I didn’t break down. I had to protect her.

“She was very upset, she was very angry with her father, and I think she was angry for me.

“She was picking up the anger that I should have felt. She also wanted to see he was OK because they have a very close relationship. She was worried about him.

“But he’s a good person, a good father, he’s been a good husband and nine-tenths of the time he’s got things right. This time he’s fallen… badly.”

Ms Fernandes said she experienced a range of emotions, from deep sadness to hot, visceral anger, but it took her two days to actually cry.

“The pain comes out from nowhere” she claims.

Even though she had no idea her husband enjoyed having sex with men, she is certain he did not take any drugs.

“He’s an anti-drug person. He’s somebody who wouldn’t. I could never imagine him saying yes to drugs. He doesn’t even like alcohol.”

Vaz’s wife said it was a ‘complete shock’ and ‘out of the blue’ that her husband of 23 years paid male prostitutes for sex.

‘I’ve decided to forgive him. That’s different to forgiving him right now. If I don’t forgive him eventually, it is going to tear me up. It’s going to destroy me and I don’t want that. I don’t like that feeling of anger and bitterness.”

She told how they will undergo marriage guidance and work towards seeing through this turmoil.
