Juhi Chawla explained why she married Jay Mehta in secret.

She tied the knot with the businessman when she was at the peak of her career in the 1990s but it happened secretly.

Juhi shared that at the time, many actors did the same thing and she could get away with it in the 1990s because there were no mobile phone cameras, so there was no possibility of the news being leaked.

Revealing her decision, Juhi said:

“I was just about established and just starting to do well.

“That’s the time Jay was serenading me, and I was afraid of losing my career just when I kind of got there.

“So, I wanted to carry on and this seemed the midway, that let’s keep it quiet and it’s okay, you carry on working.”

They got married in 1995 but it was a difficult time because her mother had just passed away.

Juhi continued: “That year my mother passed away as well so I had another tragedy and that was a very difficult time for me as well because I felt I was going to lose everything I had, everything I loved, my work and my mum.”

The wedding was initially meant to be a grand event but Juhi Chawla said her mother-in-law cancelled them due to her feeling overwhelmed.

She elaborated: “I was shooting for some of the really big films of my career, and I was supposed to get married.

“My mother had just passed a year ago.

“When the marriage date was coming close, I was thinking my mother is gone, whom I loved the most, and now my career will also go away.

“I didn’t know how to be happy about it.

“So, I broke down one day and I told my mother-in-law and she said, ‘It’s okay’. Can you imagine your mother-in-law doing it for you?

“Invitations had gone out to maybe 2,000 people. She said, ‘It’s not happening now’.”

“She convinced the family to not have the big wedding and I got married but it was at home with just the family and closest friends.

“So with just 80, 90, 100 people the wedding was done.

“Imagine your mother-in-law cancelling those invitations which had gone out all over the world.

“I was a Punjabi eating chicken. Of course, after one-two years that got changed. Jay made me a vegetarian.”
