"We’re thrilled to announce our upcoming film honouring the legendary Madhubala"
In exciting news for fans of the Golden Era of Indian cinema, it has been announced that an official biopic of the iconic actress Madhubala is in production.
The film will be directed by Jasmeet K Reen, who is famous for helming Darlings (2022), which starred Alia Bhatt.
Sony Pictures Films India confirmed the development on Instagram.
Under an opulent post, they wrote:
“Exciting News! We’re thrilled to announce our upcoming film honouring the legendary Madhubala, the epitome of grace and talent.
“Get ready to delve into the timeless charm and captivating story of one of Bollywood’s most iconic stars. Stay tuned for updates! #MadhubalaFilm #BollywoodLegend #ComingSoon.”
The film will be co-produced by Madhubala’s sister Madhur Brij Bhushan and Arvind Kumar Malviya through the banner Madhubala Ventures.
The team are yet to confirm who will play the Mughal-E-Azam actress.
However, some fans expressed some suggestions underneath the post.
One fan said: “Deepika for the role.”
Another added: “Alia Bhatt.”
A third declared: “@aditiraohydari is the best choice for the portrayal of Madhubala.”
In 2022, it was rumoured that Shehnaaz Gill would play Madhubala in a reported film based on the latter’s life.
Madhubala’s sister Madhur Bhushan had addressed the possibility of her late sister’s biopic in 2022.
She had said: “The idea is to not hurt anyone’s sentiments (through the said biopic) but we will showcase several unknown facets of Madhu Apa’s life which aren’t out in public.
“The film shall also put a number of misnomers/inaccuracies about her life to rest.
“Makers of Apa’s biopic backed by me will have all the creative freedom to put out her life in a truthful and honest manner.”
Madhubala remains one of the most iconic and loved Bollywood actresses of all time.
She began her career as a child artist in 1942 before making her debut as a leading lady opposite Raj Kapoor in Neel Kamal (1947).
The star got her breakthrough role in the film Mahal (1949) in which she played a ghost.
She went on to become one of the most popular performers of her time.
She was greatly admired for her acting and beauty, so much so that she caught the attention of American superstar Frank Capra who offered her a role in Hollywood. However, this did not materialise.
In her career, she was a part of many blockbusters including Mr and Mrs 55 (1955), Kala Pani (1958) and Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958).
However, her most famous role is in Mughal-E-Azam (1960), in which she won hearts as Anarkali.
Sadly, the actress had an unhappy personal life. She had unsuccessful, highly-publicised relationships with Prem Nath and Dilip Kumar.
In 1960, she married her frequent co-star Kishore Kumar.
Madhubala was diagnosed with a ventricular septal defect which impacted her life and career.
She died from the disease on February 23, 1969, at the age of 36.
Despite her untimely death, millions of fans still adore the artist who was also a glamorous fashionista. She introduced the trend of off-shoulder dresses and chequered shirts.
With so much adulation still bubbling among fans, a biopic of Madhubala in the capable hands of Jasmeet K Reen is an exciting prospect indeed.
