She held both her former boyfriend and the police responsible for her death.

An Indian student has taken her own life after her ex-boyfriend threatened to leak personal videos online.

The young woman took her life on 8th April 2017. She wrote a note prior, in which she blamed both her former boyfriend and police.

In her note, she claimed that her ex-boyfriend had threatened to release intimate videos on social media.

In the UK, this type of harassment is known as revenge porn. There are cases similar to this, where a scorned partner leaks private images or videos of their ex to social media.

However, the Indian student also called out Model Town police station, based in Delhi. She claimed that they appeared unsupportive when she approached them to complain.

Therefore, she held both her former boyfriend and the police responsible for her death.

Police are now looking for the student’s ex-partner as they have filed a case of abetment against him. Deputy Commissioner, Jatin Narwal, said:

“We have registered a case of abetment against the accused and have sent teams to arrest him. We are also looking into the allegations made against the police department. If the department is found at fault, strict action will be taken.”

The Indian student originally hailed from Madhya Pradesh but came to Delhi to graduate from a private university. She and her boyfriend eventually met and formed a relationship.

But despite at one point planning to marry, they broke up.

A police officer revealed more details on the split. He said:

“Investigation has revealed that the two were in a relationship for three years but their families did not approve of their relationship. The accused was forcing the woman to leave her family and go with him to Patna. But she was not willing.

“When she refused and went back to her parents’ house, he kept stalking her and threatened to tarnish her image by uploading their private pictures and videos online.”

And unfortunately, this revenge porn case has taken a tragic turn as the woman took her own life.

In the UK, the government have implemented new measures to tackle revenge porn. Just recently, they have announced tougher sentences for these cases. This has been welcomed by revenge porn victims as it can create severe emotional consequences.

It has taken a long time for the UK government to create these tough laws. First announced in April 2015, they only went into action on 30th March 2017.

However, in India, it seems that the police will ignore people seeking for action. One could possibly argue how many cases will it take for change?

Will this particular case make the Indian government realise the harrowing effects of revenge porn? It remains to be seen.
