Police discovered that an Indian man was tied in chains by his brother-in-law. Officers were shocked when they found out that the man had been chained up for seven years.

The incident happened in the city of Bathinda, Punjab.

District and Sessions Judge Kamaljeet Lamba and Chief Judicial Magistrate Ashok Kumar Chauhan went with a team of police officers to the house after receiving information.

They entered the house and found the man chained up. They freed the victim and registered a case.

The matter came to light after paralegal volunteer Ramanik Walia went to the court, explaining that the brother-in-law of Nirmal Singh had chained him up for seven years.

It was reported that he carried out the heinous crime due to greed. The brother-in-law wanted the land that Nirmal was entitled to.

It was alleged that the brother-in-law threatened Nirmal’s father, telling him not to say anything.

Judge Lamba and CJM Chauhan took notice of the case and went to the house with a team of police officers.

When they entered the house, they found 30-year-old Nirmal in a small room on a bed and was tied with a chain that was used for cows.

Police freed Nirmal. Meanwhile, they arrested his brother-in-law and sister-in-law. During questioning, they claimed that they chained him up due to his ongoing mental health issues.

They said that Nirmal had been mentally ill for many years and would cause a lot of damage in the village.

They said they chained him up and kept him in the room as they feared he might set someone’s field on fire.

CJM Chauhan instructed the police officers to take action under the Mental Health Act. He said that the Indian man should be taken to the hospital for medical treatment and for tests to see if he has been suffering mental health issues.

He added that the victim should receive immediate help if he is found to have mental health issues.

When officers spoke to locals, they said that Nirmal used to always be outside playing sports. They said he was a good basketball player.
