"[He] showed them obscene videos on his mobile phone and molested them."
An unnamed dance teacher from Pune was arrested on Thursday, January 17, 2019, for allegedly touching two girls inappropriately.
He also showed the two victims explicit videos on his mobile phone.
It was heard that the two girls were students of his and the incident happened during dance sessions in December 2018.
Initially, the victims were reluctant to tell someone about the incident as they were threatened by the teacher.
However, one of the girls, aged 13, narrated her ordeal to her mother who then spoke to a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO). They then filed a case of molestation to Hadapsar police against the dance teacher.
The accused had shown the girls obscene videos and touched them inappropriately on the pretext of teaching them to dance.
The dance teacher was arrested by police where he was remanded in custody.
A police official said: “The suspect is the class teacher of the student. He, on the pretext of teaching dance to the teenagers, showed them obscene videos on his mobile phone and molested them.
“He threatened the girls not to disclose the incident to anyone or else he would visit their residence.”
“The incident came to light when one of the students disclosed it to her mother following which she lodged a complaint.”
The dance teacher was booked under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code.
The police official added: “We have arrested the suspect under section 354 (molestation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant charges of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.”
It was heard that the suspect was produced before the court for seeking custodial remand for seven days. He is to remain in police custody where an inquiry has taken place.
Police continue to investigate the crime as it is a possibility that there may have been more victims.
Public prosecutor Leena Pathak told the court that the suspect’s arrest was vital in recovering his phone as it may identify other girls who may have been sexually abused and recording witness statements.
In a similar case which took place in Sikkim, a teacher at a private school was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl.
The girl had been staying at the school’s hostel where the teacher was in charge of it and it was heard he had been sexually assaulting her for several months.
The young girl narrated her ordeal to her elder sister who then informed her parents about it. The parents filed a complaint at Pakyong police station.
Officers arrested the teacher and he was booked under various sections of the IPC and the POCSO.
