"It felt like it was right up my alley.”

Jason Derulo and Nora Fatehi have collaborated on ‘Snake’, a boundary-pushing dance anthem that blends Western and Eastern influences.

The new track originated from Nora’s creative vision and was brought to Jason through producer Tommy Brown.

‘Snake’ showcases their versatility while pushing genre boundaries.

Explaining how the collaboration came about, Jason Derulo said:

“Some collaborations can feel a little forced whereas this one felt like… a hot knife through butter.

“It felt like it was right up my alley.”

Meanwhile, it was a more intricate process for Nora:

“I was trying to figure out how to mix three different cultures into one project and to make it global.

“We wanted a hook that repeats itself, very easy to memorise.”

The accompanying music video was helmed by Moroccan director Abderrafia El Abdioui, and choreographed by India’s Rajit Dev.

Filmed among Marrakesh’s striking scenery, Nora also worked on production and brought together an international crew working 15-hour days.

Nora explained: “We created a futuristic Morocco in the visuals.”

There were challenges but it was a process Nora embraced.

“I love the panic, the anxiety because I know that with anxiety, something amazing is about to happen.”

The collaboration pushed Jason and Nora into creative territory, particularly in the dance sequences.

Jason said: “When I got to Morocco, Nora wanted to do some moves that I had never done before, which is kind of weird because I’ve done everything.”

There are belly dance and Bollywood influences, which were natural for Nora but new for Jason.

But he embraced the cultural elements, something Nora praised:

“He actually embraced the culture… he wore the Moroccan jalabiyas and a very famous designer, Manish Malhotra’s kurta. He was really in it.”

Nora said ‘Snake’ is an important step to boost her international career.

“I’m venturing into an international career right now, coming straight off Bollywood, which is really difficult for Bollywood actors to do.”

For Jason Derulo, ‘Snake’ marks a return to elaborate music videos:

“I think in this day and age, music videos are dead, and especially where I’m from, in America, people aren’t putting any emphasis on music videos.

“I hope this will signify a new beginning for artists to be like, ‘Okay, this is still possible’.”

Nora Fatehi agreed that high production values have to be maintained, adding:

“If you have the platform, you have the fans, you have the music, you’re able to dance, you have all the necessary elements to be a global artist.

“You should use that to your advantage.”

Fan reaction to the newly released single has been positive, with one person tweeting:

“The collab we never knew we needed.”

Another fan said: “Jason and Nora are the perfect combo, they’re giving us pure magic here!”

A third added: “Jason and Nora together? Iconic.”

Although ‘Snake’ represents a big milestone for both artists, the pair have their own individual projects.

Jason Derulo is currently hosting the TikTok Live Awards in the UK while Nora Fatehi is preparing a solo song that will feature a sample of Britney Spears’ iconic track ‘Toxic’.
