Female prison officers having sex with male inmates in the UK has surged, with a record number being fired in the past three years.
Between 2017 and 2019, nine prison officers were dismissed for romping with inmates behind bars.
But this figure increased to 29 between 2020 and 2023.
According to The Sun, some prison guards had been sneaking inmates into staff-only areas or even cutting holes in their uniforms to make sexual acts easier.
Fifty out of 124 investigations following tip-offs about alleged “inappropriate” relationships were upheld.
Some officers were spared the axe and were suspended or moved to a new role.
No male officers were caught with female inmates but three same-sex relationships were discovered.
In January 2024, a prison officer was jailed for 16 months after she was caught on camera having sex with an inmate.
Whilst working at HMP Birmingham, Shania Begum struck up an “inappropriate relationship” with Joshua Mullings.
Begum used a store cupboard to engage in “play fighting, flirting, heavy petting, and penetrative sex” with the inmate.
However, their trysts were busted when prison bosses became suspicious and installed a camera, which caught them red-handed.
An anti-corruption probe was carried out after prison intelligence led bosses to believe Begum was having a relationship with Mullings.
The activity also included the prison officer giving Mullings oral sex on at least two occasions.
The footage also showed Begum’s radio going off, which she ignored. She had also been interrupted by other staff members.
In one instance, she could not be located for approximately an hour.
When Begum was arrested, her phone was seized and her internet browsing history revealed she was interested in Mullings and the media reports about him.
One high-profile incident involved footage of a prison officer having sex with an inmate going viral.
At HMP Wandsworth, Linda De Sousa Abreu was filmed on her knees performing a sex act on prolific burglar Linton Weirich.
A second inmate – seen on camera and supposedly smoking a cigarette – says:
“This is a movie innit – gangsters online.”
The jail guard then starts having sex with Weirich against the cell door.
Footage of the sexual act quickly appeared on social media.
It was revealed that De Sousa Abreu was originally from Brazil and shared an OnlyFans account with her husband.
At a hearing at Isleworth Crown Court, she pleaded guilty to one count of misconduct in a public office.
The Prison Service said: “Staff corruption is not tolerated.
“The overwhelming majority of our prison staff are hardworking and honest. We are dedicated to rooting out those who are not.”
