Asians on King’s 1st New Year Honours List 2024

King Charles III’s first New Year Honours List 2024 has been published and 1,227 people across the UK have been recognised for their contributions to UK society.

Individuals have been recognised for being dedicated community champions, role models in sport, pioneers in the arts, passionate health workers and supporters of young people.

Of those recognised, 48% are women.

Over 13% come from an ethnic minority background.

The honours handed out include Companions of Honour (CH), Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (GCB/KCB/CB), Order of St Michael and St George (Knight/GCMG/KCMG/DCMG/CMG), Knighthood and Damehood (Knight/DBE), Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) and British Empire Medal (BEM).

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said:

“The New Year Honours List recognises the exceptional achievements of people across the country and those who have shown the highest commitment to selflessness and compassion.

“To all honourees, you are the pride of this country and an inspiration to us all.”

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden added:

“This year’s New Year Honours List celebrates the most selfless, compassionate people in the UK.

“I send them all my warmest congratulations for what they have achieved.

“Our historic honours system exists to recognise these people and shine a light on their heroic contributions and achievements.

“I hope that the inspiring stories from across the whole of the UK encourage more people to nominate others for an honour in future.”

As for the Asian contributions, the New Year Honours List commends the hard work and efforts of men and women with South Asian roots who have made a major impact on communities around the UK.

Former Conservative Party Chancellor Sajid Javid received a Knighthood.

He is the most high-profile political figure to be recognised in the 2024 New Year Honours List.

Arsenal FC CEO Vinaichandra Guduguntla Venkatesham received an OBE for services to sport.

Another recognised for their services to sport is Dr Sanjay Bhandari, who received an MBE.

He is the Chair of Kick It Out, which works to tackle discrimination in football.

Speaking about the honour, he said:

“I am humbled and honoured to receive an award like this.”

“It is a recognition of the team that I have a privilege to lead. This is just as much a recognition of that fantastic team, as it is of my small contribution to it.”
