"I found him rude and inconsiderate."

Shehzad Khan, who played Vinod Bhalla in the cult comedy Andaz Apna Apna (1994), revealed why there was tension between the two leading men of the film – Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.

The comedic classic was helmed by Rajkumar Santoshi and also featured Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles.

It was the first film to star Aamir and Salman together. In the early 1990s, the pair were fresh-faced newcomers, who had won hearts with their romantic onscreen personas.

Andaz Apna Apna – filmed at Madh Island – saw the two actors shed their images of romance and play hapless, funny characters.

Many love the film for its rib-tickling scenes, jovial dialogue and chemistry between Aamir and Salman.

However, it is hard to believe that off-screen, things were not as smooth between them.

Shehzad explained that timing was one of the main issues between the actors.

He stated: “Aamir would reach Madh Island’s bungalow at 7 am for a 9 am shift.

“He used to practice riding there and come straight to set.

“Salman would arrive by 10 am or 11 am.”

Shehzad continued to say that while there were differences between Aamir and Salman, they never openly confronted each other.

He recollected: “[Disagreements] never occurred between them on set. I never saw anything like that.

“If anything was said to the director or producer behind closed doors, then I have no idea about that.”

During an appearance on Koffee With Karan in 2013, Aamir Khan also addressed the conflict between him and Salman during Andaz Apna Apna:

“In Andaz Apna Apna, I had a very bad experience working with Salman.

“I didn’t like him – I found him rude and inconsiderate.”

Aamir went on to reminisce about how this toxicity developed into friendship:

“It changed sometime around when I split up with Reena [Dutta].

“Over the years, I had met Salman and was polite with him. But after the experience of working with him in Andaz Apna Apna, I felt, ‘I just want to stay away from this guy’.

“So he walked into my life at a juncture when I was at my lowest.

“We met and he sat with me and we began drinking. We began spending more and more time together. I think I also eased off a lot.

“I think he also grew a little more mature than he used to be.”

“We kind of struck a chord and that grew into a friendship and a fondness. I think he’s a wonderful guy.”

Salman Khan and Aamir Khan are known for their close friendship which is uncommon in the world of Bollywood where rivalry and competition runs rampant.

Despite their closeness however, the duo are yet to work together again.

Meanwhile, Andaz Apna Apna flopped at the time of its release, but has since gone on to become an audience favourite.
