"you're not the kind of Indian we want."
In a social media video, a US Indian software engineer was laid off and revealed how he was told Indian nationals would be taking over his position.
Introducing himself as a software engineer, the man explained that he works in tech.
He then revealed that he and his whole team were recently laid off.
The man went on to reveal the “craziest part”.
“You know the craziest part was in my exit interview, they go, ‘Hey, we’re replacing you guys, we’re getting rid of the whole team and we’re replacing you guys with Indians’.”
Confused by the reason, the engineer interrupted and told his employers:
“I look them dead in the eye and go, ‘You guys know that I’m Indian right?’
“We can get the rest of these people out of here but you can keep me around, I’m already Indian.”
He joked that they are free to get rid of his colleagues and replace them with “his friends”.
However, the engineer was stunned to be told:
“You don’t get it, you’re not the kind of Indian we want.”
He then asked: “What kind do you mean?”
He joked that he is happy to put on an Indian accent but it is then revealed that his employers “want Indians from India”.
Trying to hold onto his job, the man explained that he was originally from India and moved to the United States when he was two.
He stated that if the job is moving to India, he has no issues returning to his home country.
The employers then said: “We are getting rid of you because we are moving the job, your entire team’s job to India to be done by Indians from India who live there and will do it cheaper.”
The engineer ended the video by ironically remarking:
“I was like these goddamn Indians are taking our jobs.”

The video went viral on X and sparked a debate.
Many highlighted that it was to reduce labour costs, with one writing:
“It’s not that you’re Indian it’s that you are now 90% less expensive.”
Another said: “American corporations: we want to help you achieve the American dream.
“So we can take it from you and give it to somebody else to achieve the American dream.”
A third added: “It’s all about the money.
“They will work for way less in India. It’s not even close. We can’t compete with India, or China when it comes to how little they can survive with over there.”
One person who works in software said this is the norm but claimed the work done in India was substandard.
The user tweeted: “I work in software and I can corroborate this 100%.
“Additionally, I worked with many Indians here in America and they were all on work visas are were terrified of having to go back – few got green cards.
“I will also say that 90% of the work we had down in India had to be redone once we got it in-house.”
