"I got to go to the Aamir Khan school of filmmaking."
Tisca Chopra reflected on working with Aamir Khan in his directorial debut Taare Zameen Par (2007).
In the film, Tisca played Maya Awasthi – the mother of the main protagonist Ishaan Awasthi (Darsheel Safary).
The actress opened up on collaborating with the Laal Singh Chaddha star.
She said: “One day Aamir called me and said that we should have sold tissue papers also with the film’s tickets so that we could have made double the money.
“Even Karan Johar was teary-eyed after watching the film.
“Aamir Khan was a school. I got to go to the Aamir Khan school of filmmaking.
“He was very meticulous even though it was his first film. He too was learning things and we were all a part of this process.
“He would involve us in blocking, shot division, choosing lenses, etc.
“I could relate to that kind of authenticity and love for cinema.
“Because I too am meticulous and I like that kind of working style.
“In fact, I ended up irritating him by asking for retakes of my shots often, saying I could do it better.
“It was a wonderful experience. He worked so hard on each and every part of it to the point that it couldn’t be bettered any more.”
Tisca also shared how the film impacted her career. She continued:
“Not only did it change my career path and garner me international recognition, but it also brought about many changes in the education system and inclusivity.
“It also proved that there’s a sweet spot between creativity and commerce.”
Tisca won hearts as the loving mother in Taare Zameen Par.
While Ishaan does not receive much affection from his strict father Nandkishore Awasthi (Vipin Sharma), his relationship with Maya is filled with love.
This is underscored in the heart-wrenching number ‘Maa‘.
Tisca also shared her experiences working with Karan Johar and his production banner Dharma Productions.
She has worked for the company in Good Newwz (2019) and Jugg Jugg Jeeyo (2022).
Tisca said: “Everything is so organised in Dharma, everything is so smooth.
“There is a chill factor, if you need four changes (of looks) you’ll be given 40 options. I love them.”
“They treat you like a king.”
On the work front, Tisca Chopra was last seen in Murder Mubarak (2024).
Meanwhile, Aamir Khan was last seen in Salaam Venky (2022) in a special appearance.
He will next star in Sitaare Zameen Par, which is scheduled to be released during Christmas 2024.
