A Sikh musician was shot dead outside a Gurdwara in Alabama in a suspected hate crime case.

Raj Singh, who is also known as Goldy, was part of a kirtan group.

Originally from Uttar Pradesh, he had been in the United States with his group for one and a half years.

On February 24, 2024, Raj had gone to the Gurdwara in Selma to perform with his group.

Afterwards, the 29-year-old had been waiting outside when unidentified assailants fatally shot him in the abdomen. News of his death reached his family the following day.

His brother-in-law Gurdeep Singh said:

“We were informed about the incident by relatives.

“It has been five days, and his postmortem is yet to be done. We have reached out to the Gurdwara committee for more information, and they are helping us.

“We have also appealed to our government for justice and the arrest of the killers.”

While the motive behind Raj’s murder is yet to be determined, his family believe the shooting was a case of hate crime.

Raj Singh was the eldest in his family and the sole breadwinner. His father, Dheere Singh, died five years ago.

He leaves behind his mother, two sisters and a younger brother.

The family has urged the government to make arrangements to bring the body back home for his cremation.

Selma Police have said there is no indication of racial motivation behind Raj’s killing.

In recent weeks, there has been a spate of Indians being killed in the United States.

In February 2024, motel owner Pravin Raojibhai Patel was shot dead following an altercation with a customer over room rental.

He owned the Hillcrest Motel in Sheffield, Alabama.

According to a report from Sheffield Police Chief Ricky Terry, the 76-year-old was shot by William Jeremy Moore after the latter had come to the motel and tried to book a room.

An altercation occurred between the two men.

Moore then pulled out a handgun and shot Mr Patel.

The report stated: “Mr Moore was quickly apprehended by Sheffield Police on 13th Avenue when he was trying to break into an abandoned house.

“When searching Mr Moore, the murder weapon was found in his possession.”

Jemeriz Owens, who is a barber across the street from the motel, said he heard three gunshots in a row.

He said: “He (Patel) was outside. He was just trying to get somebody to leave, and they didn’t want to leave and they shot him.”
