The suspect recommended her cousin Sukhjit.
Police arrested a Punjabi woman in a dowry case.
Sandeep Kaur acted as a mediator for an arranged marriage and was wanted in a dowry harassment and criminal conspiracy case.
She was arrested at Delhi Airport. Kaur was allegedly set to go to Canada to avoid arrest.
Originally from the Punjab city of Moga, Kaur is now a resident of Canada.
A complaint was filed by Mandar Singh, the father of a Canada-based woman, claiming the in-laws were harassing his daughter for dowry.
A case of criminal conspiracy and harassment for dowry was registered at Hathur Police Station on February 20, 2024.
Those named in the FIR include the victim’s husband Sukhjit Singh and mother-in-law Harminder Kaur as well as Sandeep Kaur, who helped facilitate the marriage.
In his police complaint, Mandar Singh said his daughter Jaswinder Kaur went to Canada in 2015 and was granted permanent residency.
His son Barinderpal Singh lived in Canada and knew Sandeep Kaur, who mediated the marriage between Jaswinder and Sukhjit.
When the Punjabi woman was in Canada, Barinderpal helped and supported her.
Barinderpal asked Kaur to find a partner for his sister. The suspect recommended her cousin Sukhjit.
She also claimed Sukhjit owned 10 acres of land and was a partner in an immigration firm in Raikot.
Believing Kaur’s claims, the marriage was arranged and Jaswinder and Sukhjit tied the knot in December 2021.
As per the groom’s family, Jaswinder’s family spent a lot of money on the wedding, including jewellery, clothes and the venue.
After the wedding, Jaswinder returned to Canada in March 2022.
However, she was stunned when her in-laws demanded $28,000 from her. When she handed over the money, they used it to buy a car in India.
In Canada, Sukhjit harassed his wife.
He then moved in with another woman whilst continuing to harass Jaswinder for dowry.
Investigating officer ASI Manohar Lal said Sukhjit, his mother Harminder and the mediator continually harassed Jaswinder and her family for dowry.
Kaur and her husband travelled to Punjab but when she found out a police case was registered against her, she tried to flee.
A Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued to prevent her from leaving the country and due to this, when she tried to take a flight to Canada, the airport police alerted the Ludhiana police, whose team immediately reached there and arrested Sandeep Kaur.
