"I was the first one to fight for pay parity"
Kangana Ranaut has claimed that she was the first actress to fight for equal pay and claimed that many actresses do films for free.
Her comments were in reaction to a video of Priyanka Chopra talking about pay parity in Bollywood.
In the video, Priyanka revealed that she “never had pay parity in Bollywood”, even after 60 films.
She also revealed that she was paid about 10% of what the male actor would get paid.
Sharing her perspective on the matter, Kangana took to her Instagram Story and wrote:
“It’s true women before me simply submitted to these patriarchal norms.
“I was the first one to fight for pay parity and the most disgusting thing that I faced while doing this was that my contemporaries offered to work for free on the same roles that I was negotiating for.
“I can say with confidence most A-listers (women) do films for free along with offering other favours because they fear roles will go to the right people and then shrewdly release articles that they are highest paid ha ha…”
The outspoken actress went on to say that she is the only actress in Bollywood who receives equal pay to her male co-stars.
She added: “In the film industry everyone knows that I only get paid like male actors and no one else and they have no one else to blame at least now…”
Kangana shared the screen with Priyanka in the 2008 film Fashion. Both actresses received National Film Awards for their performances.
Previously, Kangana reacted to Priyanka’s claims that she was being “cornered” in the industry.
Kangana blamed Karan Johar and tweeted:
“This is what @priyankachopra has to say about Bollywood, people ganged up on her, bullied her and chased her out of the film industry a self-made woman was made to leave India.
“Everyone knows Karan Johar had banned her.”
She also claimed Karan bullied her.
Referring to Karan as “Chacha Chaudhary”, Kangana Ranaut wrote:
“Here was a time when Chacha Chaudhary along with the elite nepo mafia would insult and bully me on national television because I couldn’t speak English…
“Today I realised after seeing his Hindi, so far I have rectified your Hindi, see what happens henceforth.”
On the work front, Kangana was last seen in Dhaakad, which had a poor box office performance.
She will next be seen in Emergency, which she has also directed.
