"my brother-in-law sexually assaulted me."
A 20-year-old Indian wife from Jodhewal, Ludhiana has accused her husband and in-laws of sexually abusing her.
The woman, who is pregnant, explained that her husband forced her to have a physical relationship with his younger brother. She was also beaten by her other in-laws.
Following her complaint, the police registered a case against the woman’s husband and in-laws.
Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gurmeet Singh said that the woman was married on March 31, 2019. However, just a few days later, her husband started harassing her.
He allegedly forced her to have a sexual relationship with his brother, but she was against it. This led to the brother raping his sister-in-law.
In her complaint, the woman said:
“Days after my marriage in March, my husband started harassing me.
“One day, he asked me to have physical relations with his brother. A month later, my brother-in-law sexually assaulted me.
“Threatening me of dire consequences, he forced me to have illicit relations with him.”
After threatening to kill her, the woman spoke to her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. However, they told her to put up with it.
This prompted her brother-in-law to sexually assault her during the day and it soon became a daily thing.
On the night of September 20, 2019, the husband and his family brutally beat up the Indian wife.
Following the assault, the woman was eventually able to get out of the house and go to a police station where she told officers about her ordeal.
The woman was taken to the hospital for a medical examination where doctors revealed she was four months pregnant.
ASI Singh said:
“The medical examination of the survivor was conducted at civil hospital and it revealed that she was four months pregnant.”
“The house of the accused was locked when we went there.
“The survivor’s husband, his brother, sister and mother have been booked under sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.”
ASI Singh added that the suspects are currently on the run. The Times of India reported that an investigation is continuing in order to track down and arrest the family members.
The poor treatment of a daughter-in-law is nothing new within a South Asian household as it has gone on for centuries.
There have been many stories of a daughter-in-law being badly treated by her husband and his family, which ranges from harassment to physical abuse.
Even though marriage is supposed to be the beginning of a wonderful and happy life for a couple, the reality for some is an unhappy and sometimes violent one.
