The woman believed him and transferred the money.

An Indian man was arrested on Sunday, October 20, 2019, for using Shaadi.com to meet a woman who he later scammed out of Rs. 15 Lakh (£16,000) and raped.

He had targeted the woman by getting into a relationship with her and promising to marry her.

DCP Yogesh Dadhich confirmed that the suspect was arrested and was identified as Sandeep Chaudhary.

He had set up a fake profile on the matrimonial site Shaadi.com in mid-2019, claiming to be a businessman.

DCP Dadhich explained that Chaudhary had been on the run since July 2019, after the victim filed a complaint at the police station.

She had told officers that he created an account on Shaadi.com with the intention of getting married.

Chaudhary had approached the woman online and the two began chatting. He told her that he was single even though he was actually married.

Chaudhary lied about himself to the woman including the claim that he owned a successful and prominent business in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

He eventually promised the woman that he would marry her.

His claims convinced the woman and she wanted to meet him. She also spoke about getting the wedding sorted.

However, she was unaware that this was part of Chaudhary’s plan.

Additional DCP Avneesh Sharma explained that the Indian man told the victim to deposit Rs. 5 Lakh (£5,400) to one bank account and Rs. 10 Lakh (£10,800) to another.

Chaudhary told her that the money would be used to pay for their new house and household items. The woman believed him and transferred the money.

He eventually met the woman in Jaipur and continued to promise marriage until he got to her apartment where he raped her.

Chaudhary escaped her apartment and stopped returning her calls.

She went to the police and filed a complaint. A case was registered and the investigation was led by ACP Richa Tomar and Hiralal Saini.

They enlisted the help of the Cyber Cell which discovered that Chaudhary had been moving from place to place in order to avoid arrest.

He had been renting rooms in Ghaziabad, Meerut and Delhi while on the run.

Police officers conducted raids in the cities and Chaudhary was eventually found in Ghaziabad.

He was brought to Jaipur where officers have questioned about conning and raping the woman he had met through Shaadi.com.

Police have said that it is possible that he may have done the same to other women. They plan to question him about whether he has conned and raped other women.
