An Indian businessman was robbed and beaten to death on the night of January 6, 2020. He had been on his way home from work.

Police identified the victim as 40-year-old Gaurav Chandel, a resident of Parthala Chowk, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

He worked at a firm called 3M. Mr Chandel commuted daily to Gaur Chowk for work.

The victim was married and they had a 14-year-old son.

Police believed he was killed just before midnight. His body was recovered around 4:30 am near Parthla Chowk.

His friends told police that he would make a stop and have a cigarette before reaching home.

Police have said he had been bludgeoned to death based on impact injuries to his head. Police officers explained that Mr Chandel had left his office late in the evening in his car.

At around 10:30 pm, he called his wife Preeti, saying he would be home in five minutes. However, when he did not return for another half an hour, his family tried to call him but received no response.

His family and neighbours approached Bisrakh Police Station at 11 pm and explained what happened.

The next day, Mr Chandel’s family claimed that the police were not taking the matter seriously, citing jurisdictional issues.

However, police maintained that they were taking the issue seriously and they began a search.

Meanwhile, family members and neighbours also formed a search.

One family member said: “After five hours, we found Gaurav’s body close to a service road near Hindon bridge.

“It was clear he had been brutally assaulted. Precious time was wasted looking for him.”

While his body was found, his phone, laptop and car were missing. It was revealed that Mr Chandel had purchased his car in December 2019.

The investigation continues but police are yet to find an eyewitness. They are looking at CCTV footage from the area.

Officers say it is likely that more than one person was involved in the murder of the Indian businessman.

One officer said:

“The post-mortem is underway. Impact injuries on the head suggest repeated attacks.”

“We have circulated photos of the vehicle and are trying to identify the accused.”

Meanwhile, social media users demanded justice. One person wrote:

“Can we assure our family that we will return (from the office) in the evenings? Who will ensure our safety? Take strict action against the culprits.”

Another person commented: “#JusticeforGauravChandel #UnsafeGrenoWest. Need strict action in this case by Noida Police.

“Also, preventive measures like better lighting, CCTVs and frequent police patrolling are required.”
