On Thursday, July 30, 2020, police arrested a 55-year-old grandmother for allegedly beating her grandson.

The shocking incident happened in Ludhiana, Punjab.

It was reported that the woman tied her eight-year-old grandson with an iron chain before brutally beating him with rods.

As a result of the attack, the boy suffered a fractured arm and was taken to hospital.

According to police, the child’s mother died a few months ago at their village in Uttar Pradesh. Afterwards, both her children were sent to live with their grandmother in Ludhiana.

The father lived somewhere else as they were divorced.

The matter came to light on July 28 after a local named Balwinder Kaur filed a police complaint.

She told police that a woman living in the area used to violently beat her grandson on a regular basis.

On July 28, the grandmother used rods to beat her grandson after tying his legs up with an iron chain.

Balwinder said that she and her husband made their way into the house and rescued the child. They also called an ambulance and the boy was taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, the grandmother fled with her granddaughter.

Inspector Mohammad Jameel said that both children lived with their maternal grandmother after their mother died. Neighbours said that the woman regularly beat her grandson.

The medical report confirmed that the boy suffered a fracture in one arm and was also bleeding in the legs.

The boy remains in hospital where he is in a stable condition.

Inspector Jameel said: “The complainant told us that the grandmother used to thrash the boy often.

“That day too, she tied him with an iron chain, removed his clothes and then thrashed him with an iron rod and sticks.”

“He was rescued and has been admitted to ESI Hospital where his condition is now stable.”

While it is believed that the woman tied up her grandson and beat him, it has not been confirmed.

Police stated that the woman was arrested on July 30. When questioned, she admitted beating her grandson.

However, she claimed that she used to beat him because of his bad behaviour. She also alleged that he would run away from home and would not come back for days.

An FIR was registered against the woman under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons) of the IPC and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, at the Focal Point police station.
