Bus driver, Alan Chima, aged 39, was arrested and charged with possessing extreme porn images of women having sex with horses, cats, dogs and a chicken.
He had a total of 38 images on his laptop of this form of sordid porn known as beastiality.
The porn was discovered by police at his home in London, when officers visited him in July 2015 regarding a different matter.
The father of one, previously from Basildon in Essex, broke down in tears when he was questioned by police regarding his obscene collection of images.
With the hearing in Basildon Crown Court, Paul Koffman, Chima’s defence lawyer said: said: “He was in tears at the police station.”
“While he is quite adamant he didn’t know it was illegal he knows in the eyes of most people this behaviour is abhorrent.
“He was very ashamed and remains so by his behaviour.”
The prosecution led by Richard Burrington, said: “I see reference to a cat in there as well.”
It was stated that Chima was going through a ‘phase’ where he was getting gratification from these images.
The phase started for Chima after the break-up of a relationship. His ex-partner is now using the allegations to deny access to his daughter.
In Chima’s defence, Kauffman also gave an example of the Mayfair Gallery, The Scream, who were not aware a painting called Leda and the Swan showing a nude woman embraced sexually around an animal was illegal and had to remove it:
“If a respectful gallery in Mayfair had to remove a painting because they didn’t know it crossed a line what chance would anyone else?”
Judge David Owen-Jones who sentenced Chima declined to see the 24-minute compilation of the perverse images, saying: “helpfully the description given by the police is sufficient for me to recognise the appalling nature of these images.”
Giving Chima a sentence of eight months in jail suspended for two years, the judge said:
“I know not that you didn’t fully appreciate that downloading disgusting images of this kind here is a criminal offence but now you know and let everyone know that it is a criminal offence.”
“These were shocking images and it occurred over a fairly lengthy period,” added the judge.
In view of his guilty plea, his age and his overall good character, in addition to the suspended sentence, Chima was also ordered to attend a 60-day rehabilitation programme and do 120 hours of unpaid work and have his laptop destroyed.
