"I was mentally frustrated"
Tamil legend Vijay Sethupathi, whose daughter was threatened with rape has received an apology from the culprit.
The actor landed himself in hot water after signing for Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan’s biopic film, 800.
As a result of this, Vijay Sethupathi was targeted by fans as well as his family received threats.
In particular, one social media user threatened his daughter with rape. He further added that it must be done “in order for her father to understand the difficult lives led by Tamils in Sri Lanka.”
However, many people condemned the rape threat including Tamil Nadu politician, Dr S. Senthikumar. He tweeted:
“Kindly track this person and put him behind bars to the notice of @CMOTamilNadu @chennaipolice.”
Now, the accused took to Twitter to share a video of himself apologising for his comment. He said:
“I’m the one who posted the rude comment against Vijay Sethupathi’s daughter. I was mentally frustrated due to the sudden unemployment during the pandemic.
“Also, I was upset knowing that Vijay Sethupathi was involved in a film that talks ill about the civil war in Sri Lanka.”
He continued to acknowledge his mistake and asked for forgiveness. He said:
“I know what I did was wrong and I deserve a brutal punishment. I blurred my face because my identity would affect my family.
“I request Vijay Sethupathi to consider me as a brother and forgive me.
“Please consider my family and requesting Tamils across the globe and media to forgive me.”
The news of 800 was announced earlier this year when it made headlines for the release of its first teaser for the biopic film.
Unfortunately, Vijay Sethupathi’s decision to essay the role of Muttiah Muralitharan was met with hostility by Tamil nationalists.
Allegedly, the Sri Lankan cricketer has been accused of supporting the Sri Lankan civil war which resulted in the death of many Eelam Tamils.
Despite denying the accusations against him, for many Tamil nationalists, Muttiah Muralitharan is a resented figure.
However, due to the backlash, the cricketer asked Vijay Sethupathi to opt-out of the film. He wrote:
“Imposing pressure on actor Vijay Sethupathi to withdraw himself from the movie due to the wrong notions surrounding me.”
As of yet, news of punishment for the accused has not yet been announced. We wait to find out whether he is sentenced for his crime.
