"I felt strongly about maintaining creative control."
Preethi Nair, an award-winning author, has boldly declined a major publication house for her new book.
The upcoming book is Preethi’s fourth novel and is titled Unravelling.
It is a poignant exploration of love, choices, and complexities. The novel tells the story of Bhanu.
Preethi recently turned down a book deal from HarperCollins and has instead chosen to self-publish her new book.
This has underlined her position as an independent, creative, and unique voice in the realm of contemporary literature.
Speaking about her decision, Preethi said: “I wanted to explore the gap between what we present to the world in order to be accepted and what is really going on.
“Bhanu’s story is a universal one of love, regret, and the search for happiness.
“Turning down HarperCollins was a difficult decision, but I felt strongly about maintaining creative control.
“It was also important for me to give a voice to an older woman and show that it’s never too late to begin again.”
In Unravelling, Bhanu seemingly has everything she could wish for. This includes a loving husband, children, and a beautiful home.
As she prepares to celebrate her 40th wedding anniversary, Bhanu’s world is turned upside down by Deep.
Deep is Bhanu’s first love and upon re-entering her life, he puts a daunting proposition before her: to leave her life behind and start afresh with him.
In her new book, Preethi examines love, sacrifice, and identity.
Through the lens of Bhanu, she also explores the age-old question: “What if?”
Unravelling is based on a one-woman show that Preethi wrote, performed, and produced in the West End.
Despite Preethi never having acted before, the production was a sell-out event and was optioned for television.
With her debut novel, Gypsy Masala (2010), Preethi entered the world of self-publishing by creating an alter-ego publicist called Pru.
Pru was shortlisted for the ‘Publicist of the Year’ PPC Award, but Preethi chose not to attend as she did not want to thank the parts of herself that “had been a dream to work with”.
An inspirational speaker and visiting professor at business schools, Preethi Nair has won the Asian Woman of the Year Award.
Although she turned down HarperCollins for her new book, Preethi has previously signed a three-book deal with them.
Unravelling will be released on September 27, 2024, and you can order your copy here.
