it can be programmed to run Visual Intelligence.
Apple has surprised many by unveiling the iPhone 16e, a new budget-friendly addition to the iPhone 16 lineup.
Priced at £599, the iPhone 16e is Apple Intelligence-ready and features 5G connectivity. However, it is not the long-rumored iPhone SE 4.
The iPhone 16e is powered by the A18 chip, the same 3-nanometre processor found in the rest of the iPhone 16 lineup.
Despite this, it has notable differences compared to the baseline iPhone 16.
The phone features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display but lacks the Dynamic Island, opting instead for the return of the notch.
It includes a single 48MP rear camera, which captures images at 24MP by default and supports up to 4K 60fps video recording.
The notch houses a 12MP TrueDepth camera, enabling Face ID for secure unlocking and authentication.
One of the standout features is the inclusion of the Action Button.
Unlike other iPhone 16 models, it can be programmed to run Visual Intelligence.
This AI-powered tool allows users to point the camera at objects, such as plants, animals, and restaurant signs, to receive instant information or take action.
The device is built with aerospace-grade aluminium and features a ceramic shield covering the display.
It also carries an IP68 rating, making it resistant to dust and water, just like the rest of the iPhone 16 lineup.
With the iPhone 16e’s launch, Apple has likely phased out the home button for good. Touch ID continues to exist on other Apple products, but this marks the end of an era for the iconic button.
A big internal upgrade is the new Apple C1 chip, the company’s first in-house cellular modem. Apple has not revealed full details, but it claims the chip improves battery efficiency.
The iPhone 16e is said to support up to 26 hours of video playback on a single charge, a major step forward for budget smartphones.
The phone features a USB-C port for charging and supports wireless charging.
It runs on iOS 18, bringing Apple Intelligence capabilities, Genmojis, writing assistance, and call transcription.
It also supports satellite communications and starts with 128GB of storage, with options up to 512GB.
Preorders open on February 21, 2025, with shipping starting on February 28. The iPhone 16e will be available in matte black and matte white.
