“I just wanted to see my mother one last time.”
Adnan Sami has revealed that Pakistani authorities denied him a visa, resulting in him missing his mother’s funeral.
The emotional disclosure came during a recent appearance on Aap Ki Adalat.
The singer broke down in tears while sharing the deeply personal experience.
He said: “I applied for a visa and told them my mother had passed away. Still, they refused. I couldn’t go. I watched the entire janaza through a WhatsApp video call.”
Despite his repeated assurances that the visit was purely personal and non-political, his request was turned down.
Visibly emotional, he added: “I just wanted to see my mother one last time.”
He shared that his mother had been healthy but passed away unexpectedly two months ago.
He approached Indian authorities first, who allegedly had no issue with his travel. But the Pakistani side did not issue a visa.
The revelation triggered a wave of criticism and debate online.
Many Pakistanis accused Adnan of seeking sympathy after years of criticising the country.
A comment read: “You went from this country and betrayed it by choice. Don’t play the victim card now.”
Another said: “Good on the person who rejected your visa.”
Some users suggested the rejection was a natural consequence of his own actions.
A user said: “You should have cared for your mother while she was alive.”
Critics pointed out that Adnan’s anti-Pakistan remarks had long alienated him from the public.
Adnan Sami, originally a Pakistani national, shifted his base to India, where he built a successful music career.
He eventually renounced his Pakistani citizenship and became an Indian citizen in 2016.
The move initially drew criticism, but public attention shifted over time.
In the same interview, he recalled how his passport expired while he was living in India.
He said: “President Musharraf had accused me of abandoning Pakistan in a letter when I was still a Pakistani citizen.”
Adnan claimed Pakistani officials later told him that his passport would not be renewed.
In that case, he would be forced to return under threat.
He talked about how he was eventually granted Indian nationality, explaining:
“They have a law where the Indian Government can grant Indian citizenship to people who have extraordinary talent.”
Adnan Sami was previously married to actress Zeba Bakhtiar, and they have a son, Azaan Sami Khan, who still lives in Pakistan.
The story of his denied return to bid farewell to his mother has polarised the public.
While some empathise with his grief, others remain unforgiving of his political choices.
