Millions of Bollywood fans revere Lagaan as one of Indian cinema’s most enduring classics.

It is only the third Indian film ever to be shortlisted for an Academy Award for ‘Best Foreign Language Film’.

For that to happen, it was necessary for all aspects of the movie to be universally acclaimed.

Lagaan thrives on its visual art, and a large part of that is the way the film presents its songs.

‘O Re Chori’ shows Bhuvan Latha (Aamir Khan) and Gauri (Gracy Singh) frolicking in their love.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Russell (Rachel Shelley), who is secretly smitten with Bhuvan, waltzes around her room.

Vaibhavi intertwines British waltz routines with traditional Indian village steps.

Her work makes ‘O Re Chori’ an elegant showcase of diverse dance.

Vaibhavi delves into the challenging parts of the choreography:

“When we were recording that song, I remember I made the mistake of going up to [Gulzar] and asking him if he could simplify a line.

“Because I was thinking how I would choreograph it.”

Vaibhavi adds that Amitabh encouraged her and helped her deal with her challenges.

The mind-blowing result is there for all to see.

Aaja Nachle marked Madhuri’s acting comeback and viewers were thrilled to see the loved actress back to doing what she does best.

On YouTube, a fan comments on the remarkable contrast between Madhuri’s dancing and her age:

“Madhuri was 40 in this song and yet she dances like a 21-year-old.”

The film itself sadly did not do too well upon release.

However, this song, decorated by Vaibhavi’s choreography remains a super-hit.

Vaibhavi crafts this song as an intricate display of footwork and hand gesticulations about children.

Her ability to satisfy a younger market is a testament to her vibrant talent.

The song is aided by clown costumes, gigantic balls, and great camaraderie between the three men.

Their unconditional love for Angel shines through the song.

It takes skill to accurately convey emotion through dance. In ‘Meri Duniya’, Vaibhavi achieves that beautifully.

“He knew the steps. I’m impressed!”

These steps were indeed impressive. Hindustan Times praises the number and says:

“The fast-paced dance number with electrifying beats has a high dose of Punjabi elements, which makes it a potent mixture of dance events.”

‘Ainvayi Ainvayi’ is an excellent choice if people wish to let go and have a good time.

That makes it one of the best songs by Vaibhavi Merchant.

Shah Rukh Khan plays both of the characters.

In ‘Jabra Fan’, Gaurav dances atop buildings and performs various stunts, proclaiming his love for Aryan.

The song is filled with fast movement and hard footwork, but SRK nails all of this under the guidance of Vaibhavi.

A fan praises SRK’s effort in the song: “This man always gives his 200% in all his movies no matter how the movies are!”

Vaibhavi echoes this sentiment and says: “I think Shah Rukh comes from a space of love, respect, a lot of hard work, and discipline.

“He will rehearse, he comes prepared, and he is at it.

“He feels that dance doesn’t come naturally to him.”

The thoughts of Vaibhavi Merchant convey that it is imperative to work hard for dance sequences.

While SRK is strong, Anushka takes care of the real heavy lifting.

She is a force to reckon with. The chemistry between her and SRK strengthens the number.

The dance moves are frisky and rapid, adding to Vaibhavi’s repertoire of amazing work.

It is a sequence that scores well and high, even if the film does not.

Continuing with the successful association of Vaibhavi Merchant and Shah Rukh Khan, we come to the mega-blockbuster Pathaan.

‘Besharam Rang’ showcases the RAW agent Pathaan (played by Shah Rukh) and a sexy Dr Rubina ‘Rubai’ Mohsin (Deepika Padukone).

In the true style of the YRF Spy Universe,  the song contains gorgeous locales and has erotic choreography.

Fans love the iconography of a bold Deepika in a bikini, dancing in SRK’s arms.

Her sensuality also makes ‘Besharam Rang’ one of the best Bollywood dance sequences featuring strong women.

Vaibhavi addresses the song and says: “I was very clear that I did not want it to look like a typical Hindi film beach party song.

“The song is very languid. This song was about nuances, about style, about sensuality and relaxation in your body.

“Therefore, it made sense for even Shah Rukh’s character to lose that shirt of his and walk out.

“Nobody goes to a beach wearing full clothes.”

‘Besharam Rang’ is a classic example of showing a lot in a little. For that, it is a masterpiece of choreography.

Tum Kya Mile – Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023)

Karan Johar’s blockbuster Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani created waves of adulation.

The filmmaker puts his signature romantic stamp on the song by utilising Vaibhavi’s talent in this lilting number.

‘Tum Kya Mile’ shows Rocky Randhawa (Ranveer Singh) and Rani Chatterjee (Alia Bhatt) swooning in the mountains.

Vaibhavi divulges the challenge of working with the two actors in the song:

“The only challenge was to make Ranveer do this.

“He’s not done this lip-sync song, except for one with Priyanka Chopra in Gunday.

“Otherwise he’s never done a love song where he’s looking all dreamy, and looking at the heroine with dove eyes.

“I wanted to do an exercise of rehearsals with him.

“Alia had herself gone and visited Shah Rukh for a day to learn this because she’d never done a song like this either.”

Vaibhavi channelises the weaknesses of the actors and converts them into strengths, making ‘Tum Kya Mile’ an ode to romance.

Vaibhavi Merchant’s work is a treasure trove of ground-breaking choreography.

She is adept at melding dance with music, to create something spectacular onscreen.

These songs are all chartbusters displaying dance at its very best.

For that, Vaibhavi Merchant is a gifted choreographer.

Her work deserves to be celebrated for years to come.
