The story is the classic boy meets girl – a talented and frustrated jazz pianist Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) meets an aspiring actress named Mia (Emma Stone) who moonlights as a barista.
They fall head over heels for each other, though not love at first sight, before things become inevitably complicated.
To turn this into an original, entertaining and riveting cinematic masterpiece requires nothing less than the genius of writer/director Damien Chazelle and a stunning score by Justin Hurwitz.
Elevated by the authentic chemistry between Gosling and Stone – who are teaming up for the third time since Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) and Gangster Squad (2013), it is hardly surprising that La La Land is a forerunner for Best Picture at the 89th Academy Awards.
