His passing has triggered an outpouring of grief.
National Award-winning Malayalam actor Salim Kumar passed away while undergoing treatment for pneumonia at a private hospital in Kochi.
He was 56 years old and had been admitted to the hospital before being placed on ventilator support.
According to family sources, Kumar died at around 10.43 pm on June 6, 2026, after suffering sudden health complications.
The actor had undergone a liver transplant several years ago, making his already fragile health a source of ongoing concern.
His passing has triggered an outpouring of grief from the Malayalam film industry, political leaders, and fans.
Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan was among the first prominent voices to offer his condolences, describing Kumar as far more than a film star.
He called him a brother and a family member, reflecting the warmth and affection that Salim Kumar inspired in those who knew him personally.
Satheesan also noted that Kumar had risen from a modest background in North Paravur to become one of Indian cinema’s most respected performers.
He further recalled that the actor’s last public appearance had taken place just days earlier at a reception organised by the people of Paravur in his honour.
Actor Mammootty also expressed his deep grief over the loss.
Salim Kumar began his journey in the entertainment world as a mimicry artist before making his film debut in 1997.
He went on to become one of Malayalam cinema’s most popular and widely adored comedy actors, starring in numerous blockbuster films over his long career.
The characters he created and the dialogues he delivered became part of everyday conversations among Malayalis.
Despite making his name through comedy, Kumar consistently demonstrated a remarkable versatility that set him apart from many of his peers.
His ability to move seamlessly between humour and deeply emotional dramatic roles earned him widespread acclaim.
He received the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor for his role in Achanurangatha Veedu.
But it was his extraordinary portrayal in Adaminte Makan Abu that brought him the kind of national recognition that his talent had long deserved.
He won the National Film Award for Best Actor in 2010 for that performance, a milestone that marked a defining turning point in his career.
He also won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for the same role, making Adaminte Makan Abu the most decorated chapter of his professional life.
Beyond cinema, Salim Kumar was a vocal and committed supporter of the Congress party and its politics throughout his public life and career.
He actively campaigned for the Congress-led United Democratic Front during the most recent Kerala Assembly election.
Salim Kumar is survived by his wife, Sunitha, and two children, including his son, actor Chandu Salim Kumar.
