“It’s something that doesn’t take much to integrate into our busy everyday lives.”
A new study reveals how drinking a pint of water before mealtimes can significantly help you lose weight.
Research by the University of Birmingham suggests adults should ‘pre-load’ with 500ml of water 30 minutes before each of their three daily meals.
The experiment involves 84 obese adult volunteers being split into two groups, and monitored over a 12 week period.
They were all given the same weight management consultations and advice on lifestyle changes.
The only difference between the two groups in their weight programmes was the water intake before mealtimes.
Sparkling water and sweetened drinks were not allowed by the participants, who all drank tap or still water.
The group of 41 participants who drank water before their meals, lost an average of 4.3kg, whereas the group which didn’t only lost an average of 0.8kg.
Dr. Helen Parretti, NIHR Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham says: “The beauty of these findings is in the simplicity.
“Just drinking a pint of water three times a day before your main meals may help reduce your weight.”
She adds: “It’s something that doesn’t take much to integrate into our busy everyday lives.”
UK obesity rates are increasing at an all time high and second only to Hungary (no pun intended) within Europe, according to a 2014 study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Desis within the UK are six times more likely to suffer from obesity-related type 2 diabetes than their UK counterparts.
These startling statistics make a finding such as this even more welcoming in helping to combat weight issues and other related health problems.
The benefits of drinking water have never been more transparent, so why not give it a go and watch those pounds drop off!

According to the NHS, drinking water has tremendous health benefits and drinking a pint a day will help you reap the rewards.
Drinking six to eight glasses of water is advised. But more is better. So, keeping a bottle of mineral water with you through the day can be very beneficial.
Sipping on say a litre bottle of water through the day can really be effective.
