A couple were sentenced for stealing £250,000 from unsuspecting gymgoers.

Ashley Singh and Sophie Bruyea, both of Bromley, London, would visit gyms to steal bank and SIM cards while their victims were exercising.

They would “max out” the stolen credit cards on “expensive tech and designer gear” before selling them on.

The couple splurged the money on luxury holidays to Dubai, designer clothing and even a pedigree puppy.

Bruyea even showed off her lavish lifestyle on TikTok.

A total of 18 victims were targeted – 14 in Greater London, one in Sussex, one in Hertfordshire and two in Cambridgeshire.

They were left with massive financial stress.

The couple’s spending spree came to an end when one police officer noticed a pattern and flagged it to detectives.

A team traced the pair’s phones, cars and faces on CCTV and linked them together.

On January 27, 2023, Singh and Bruyea were arrested at Gatwick Airport as they returned from Paris with £1,700 worth of designer goods.

Their crimes spanned between January 2022 and January 2023, worth a total of £250,000.

At Croydon Crown Court, the judge branded their crime a “wicked conspiracy”.

It was heard that the couple’s actions had made some of their victims no longer feel safe around strangers – or had caused them to suffer professionally due to the stress.

They were convicted of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.

Singh was jailed for three years.

Bruyea was sentenced to 20 months in a young offenders’ institute, suspended for two years, a rehabilitation programme and 120 hours of unpaid work.

After sentencing, Detective Constable Luis Martins Da Silva, from the Met’s economic crime team, said:

“We know Londoners are worried about theft.

“It’s a horrible crime, and it causes a lot of stress, pain, and financial loss.

“That’s why we take this crime seriously and a whole team of us were committed to catching Singh and Bruyea.”

“You couldn’t fail to be moved by the devastating impact their callous behaviour had on people, and we hope that by catching them this offers victims a little bit of solace.

“I would urge anyone who has had something stolen to get in touch, because we do want to drive down this crime and go after those who target the public.

“We will now look to forfeit the proceeds of their crimes to try and help compensate those who went through this.”
