BBC releases Star Salaries List 2023-24 f

"We're always trying to be very judicious"

The BBC has released the salaries of its highest-paid stars as part of its annual report.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker is again the BBC’s top earner with £1.35 million.

This was followed by Radio 2 breakfast host Zoe Ball with £950,000.

Huw Edwards, who left the BBC in April 2024 on “medical advice”, saw his salary increase by £40,000 to £475,000 and £479,999.

Greg James, Stephen Nolan and Fiona Bruce also had an increase in salary.

Match of the Day presenter Alan Shearer earned £380,000, however, this is a decrease because in 2023, he took home £445,000.

Some famous BBC faces such as Michael McIntyre and Claudia Winkleman do not make the list as the corporation does not have to disclose the salaries of stars who are paid via production companies.

Following questions about Huw Edwards’ pay in a news briefing, director-general Tim Davie confirmed he received no settlement but said the BBC had done “the right thing” regarding pay.

Mr Davie said:

“We’re always trying to be very judicious with the spending of public money and no one wants to waste a pound.”

He added that the BBC had to act proportionately and fairly “and navigate [the issue] appropriately”.

“I think that’s what we did… we wouldn’t have wasted money if we weren’t doing the right thing.”
