Toor Dal

Dal Cardamom Recipes

This delicious Nepali yellow dal is adapted from this fantastic recipe by Cate at Girl Cooks World.

A comforting and simple dish which oozes flavour, this is one to try when you need a real pick me up.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups water
  • 1 cup yellow split peas
  •  1/2 cup diced tomatoes
  • 3 tbsp. oil
  • 1/2 tsp. cumin seeds
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1/2-inch piece grated ginger
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/2 tsp. turmeric
  • 2 crushed cardamom pods
  • 1 tbsp. butter
  • 1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves
  • Salt and pepper

Method:

  1. Add the water, split peas and tomatoes to a saucepan. Simmer over a low heat until the peas have softened.
  2. Heat the oil in a large pan over a high heat and add the onions. Cook until browned.
  3. Add the ginger, garlic, cinnamon, bay leaves and cardamom.
  4. Pour in the split pea mixture.
  5. Add the butter, coriander and season to taste.
  6. Stir together and serve.

Cardamom is often an afterthought in cooking. A few pods may be added to your curries here and there, but that might be it.
