Size Zero Kareena

I eat eight to nine small meals a day

It wasn’t just Kareena Kapoor’s clothes which attracted attention in the Bollywood movie Khambakt Ishque. Viewers of the film would have seen a new svelte Kareena Kapoor. The actress has slimmed down to a size zero for her last film. Bebo weight has reduced from 60 kg to 48 kg. Some think that she is too thin and there have been comments about anorexia.

Kareena denies rumours of anorexia and states that she has been on a healthy diet. The actress has been eating parathas for breakfast, chappatis for lunch and snacking on nuts. She has achieved her new weight by following a strict diet and fitness plan including two hours of power yoga a day.

Rujuta DiwekarRujuta Diwekar is the top celebrity fitness guru that helped Kareena achieve her diet and fitness regime. She has worked with Anil Ambani, training him for the Mumbai Marathon.

The character in Khambakt Ishque required Kareena to be lean and sexy. Kareena met Rujuta around May 2007 and she was given instructions to slim the actress down.

Rujuta’s diet secret is to eat many times but have small meals. So, Bebo was put onto a diet of  six to seven small meals a day, including snacks every three hours.

A typical day’s diet for Kareena is:

  • Breakfast: Paratha & Curd or Muesli and Milk
  • Lunch: Roti, Sabzi and Dal
  • Dinner: Roti, Dal and Sabzi

Several snacks throughout the day of curd, soya milk, nuts and slice of cheese.

Rujuta explains that Kareena is not a “pencil thin” person so she focused on a wholesome energy filled diet which included momos (dimsums), bananas, upmas and idlis. Rujuta tailored Kareena’s diet based on where she was shooting that day. In addition, Kareena has cut out meat from her diet and become a vegetarian.

Whilst giving tips for healthy eating, Rujuta says,

“Just eat what you’re eating and break it down. If you’re eating two chapattis for lunch, eat one at 11am and one at 1pm. Make sure you have breakfast. Eat stuff like peanuts. Eat a banana for breakfast. Cooking food at home doesn’t cost anything.”

With regards to her own fitness regime, Rujuta does not do anything different from what she advises her clients. She says, ” I eat eight to nine small meals a day. I mean, if you spend one day with me, you’ll find me constantly eating. I work out every day – I do yoga three or four times a week, I weight train twice a week and I run once a week. Then I make sure I get enough rest every night and try to keep myself stress-free.”

Kareena KapoorRujuta Diwekar has published a book called, “Don’t Lose you Mind. Lose your Weight.” The book details the diet which helped Bebo achieve her new figure. Rujuta extols the virtues of “nutrition not calories” and “being smart about food.”

Kareena has written a forward for the book. She explains that Rujuta changed her attitude to food and diet and that she swears by breakfast. Kareena writes that her regime is 70% diet and 30% exercise. She can more or less eat what she wants provided the portions are halved.

“In Mumbai, my breakfast is muesli and milk or a chillah or parathas; no chai or coffee. While shooting for Tashan in Ladakh. I ate fresh fruit for breakfast and thukpas and momos for my other meals. I had pudina tea without milk. On the last day, I was allowed pizza as well. In Kerala, I had idlis and appams. In Italy it was risotto and pasta with gorgonzola; half portions though, not full,” says Kareena.

Rujuta advices in her book to follow a three step plan: learn about your body, create the right plan for it, and slowly adjust your food habits.

There is no crash dieting, no carb deprivation and no cravings if you follow her diet. In one chapter the author lets you in on how Kareena achieved a bikini fit body for Tashan.

So if you want to slim down like Kareena, Rujuta’s advice may just help you achieve that sexy and slender look you desire.
