"It's a crime when there's so many Indians taking over Canada"
A viral video showed an Indo-Canadian man being racially abused by a woman, with the latter telling him to “go back home”.
Ashwin Annamalai, a resident of Kitchener-Waterloo, filmed the woman’s abuse.
According to Ashwin, he was going about his day when he encountered the woman, who abruptly stuck her middle finger up at him and told him:
“You’re not Canadian.”
Ashwin began recording as he asked her what he had done wrong.
In response, the woman demanded that he “go back to India”, claiming there were “too many Indians and Africans in Canada”.
Throughout the heated exchange, Ashwin stands his ground, repeatedly asserting that he is Canadian.
The Canadian woman points out that his parents and his grandmother are from India, which makes him Indian.
Ashwin continues to argue that he is a Canadian national.
She went on to challenge his language skills, to which Ashwin replied that he speaks both English and French.
As Ashwin spoke French, the woman appeared to not have an answer and told him to “f**k off”.
In another clip, Ashwin continued to ask the woman what his crime was.
She replied: “It’s a crime when there’s so many Indians taking over Canada and Africans taking over Canada.”
When Ashwin told her that it is “un-Canadian to provoke people” for no reason, she stormed off.
After sharing the post on X, it sparked a discussion.
The once welcoming community of Kitchener-Waterloo has seen a disturbing rise in hate, particularly against people of colour. Here’s a personal account of what I experienced today: A random woman gave me the finger & spewed hate while I was out for a walk at Erb/Avondale ? 1/n pic.twitter.com/TxvXeXW3Yd

Some condemned the woman’s racist rant.
A person commented: “This is awful, I’m sorry it happened.
“Anti-immigrant rhetoric is growing fast, politicians continue to peddle it and normalise it.”
“Very scary for all brown folks.”
Meanwhile, others said the woman had a point as one argued:
“You don’t understand, it’s not physically possible for you to ever be Canadian.
“Just as it’s not physically possible for me to ever be Indian, even if I spoke Hindi and was born in India.
“You’re r*****d, go home.”
Another stated: “You will never be Canadian. Indians have their own country, and that is not Canada.
“Go back to India, where you belong.”
One person even threatened Ashwin: “You’re an invader, a parasite.
“You are a s**t skin, and you are going the f**k back.
“By consent or conquest, you will be leaving.”
Ashwin noted that while most people in Kitchener-Waterloo are kind, a small number now feel bold enough to voice racist remarks.
He shared that this minority openly told him to leave based on his skin colour, emphasising that such behaviour needs to stop immediately.
