"Are women really safe on the Delhi Metro?"
A disturbing video of an Indian man masturbating on the Delhi Metro is circulating on social media.
The incident is believed to have been on a train that was heading to the Delhi Cantonment metro station.
It has sparked concern for the safety of women who are travelling on public transport.
In the video, a young man dressed in blue is seen performing the sex act while looking at something on his phone.
Shockingly, the young man performs the act while sitting next to a couple.
The couple do not say anything and look at their phones. Aware of what is happening next to them, they look around with visibly uncomfortable expressions on their faces.
The video briefly cuts before resuming, this time with no sign of the couple, who have presumably got off the train or have sat somewhere else.
Meanwhile, the man continues to masturbate, not caring about the other passengers nearby.
Throughout the video, nobody intervenes or tells the man to stop.
Instead, they are seen looking down at their phones.
However, the video went viral and it raised questions about the safety of women on public transport.
One user wrote: “Are women really safe on the Delhi Metro?”
Pointing out that such incidents were not uncommon on this particular form of public transport in India, one user said:
“What’s wrong with these people? And why do they exist only in Delhi Metro?”
The viral video attracted the attention of Swati Maliwal, the President of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW).
She issued a notice to the Delhi Police and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
Swati tweeted:
“Came across a viral video where a man can be seen shamelessly masturbating in Delhi Metro.”
“It is absolutely disgusting and sickening.
“I am issuing a notice to Delhi Police and Delhi Metro to ensure the strictest possible action against this shameful act.”
Obscene acts on the Delhi Metro have risen recently.
A woman named Rhythm Chanana went viral for her skimpy outfits on the metro.
In a statement, the DMRC said: “Commuters should not indulge in any activity or wear any attire which could offend the sensibilities of other fellow passengers.”
